Drying out near Shotley

Might suggest the 'Horse Sand' in the Deben Entrance ; it used to dry quite hard so no fear of boat toppling over n her Bilge keels

Many yonks since I did anything like that there , so has anybody done it since (lately) ?

Is the bank of the Orwell just north of Shotley an option? granted it has a slight slope
For a few beer tokens and simplicity there are drying maintenance grids at SYH.
Checked that area of the Orwell out at LW yesterday and there are a number of rocks strewn around. Had considered the grids at SYH which is my backup but they want £40 for non-bertholders!

Yes, ‘Horse Sand’ is a possible option. Always looked hard and clear when I used to moor at FF. May have to give John White a call. I gather there are a few nice banks developing off the Deben entrance too!

Harwich side of Stone Point, often see someone aground there by choice
Yes, have dried out there but care needed. A visit to Wrabness at low water to identify and pick a spot would be my choice for a freeby though, probably inside the port hand pile at the East end looking out for mooring gear etc.
Personally, I tend to stump up for the SYH grid as it has power and water for a scrub as well.

Just downstream of Pin Mill, a spot frequently used by bilge keepers for overnight stops etc. Easy to walk through the woods from the Butt and Oyster to scope it out beforehand

You have to pick your spot carefully, some of the foreshore at Clamp House is deep mud, other areas hard bottom.

Shotley currently have an offer £17 a meter haul out and scrub. You can inspect your prop have the scrub and be back afloat in 45 minutes.
Andy and the team are very obliging.
Otherwise in front of the Bristol Arms, there has been a boat there for several weeks now. You can have a pint whilst waiting for the
Tide.

Many years ago we used to take our Hunter 701 lifting keeler from Paglesham to a mooring at Felixstowe Ferry for a few weeks in the summer holidays. We often put her ashore on The Horse shoal to scrub one side on one tide and then the other way round for the other side on the next tide. Worked very well and the Horse at LW is a wonderful place for children, if you have any with you, to play around with shrimping nets, buckets and spades etc… if they’re old enough they can help with the scrubbing… There are also some posts at the Ferry.

Thanks guys, plenty of good suggestions there, some I was aware of but others new to me. A useful resource. Horse Sand is very tempting, as is Wrabness or even in front of Shotley sailing club. Decision, decisions ……..

Well yes a Happy Hunting Ground was the Horse Sand for us many many years ago now ; we rowed over from the Boatyard , then searched them Sands for , Clay Pipes , Shells , various Boating gear (probably discarded by previous Seafarers as either broken /busted or fell overboard) , well what a lot of Treasure Trove we found there ; all most intriguing to us youngsters ;

The best find though was Canon Balls , them were found up river from there though ; I have it in my 'Must Do again Before' listings , so really do not want another Virus like that Covid taking my precious n scarce free time away again

It put my 'Must Do again Before' back a while , bgr it , grh

Maybe after 60 years or so ,them Cannon Balls might have moved by the tide , burried by the current , found by someone else etc etc so we will hopefully find out one bright day ?

Justa bit Fred Drift ere ; if or when at the Ferry one could ask the Harbour Master about his early times searching for Shells n Clay Pipes on that Horse Sand , that would take him back a long way
