Hi peeps, in my search to find something a bit cheaper than the rip off prices of MDL at HP (inflexible too with a 6 month deal) I was wondering if anyone knew anything of dry stacks around Portsmouth. I've contacted the people at KB boatstack and they are reasonable but the lady mentioned it's a ladder to the boats, and with two kids (one 5 months old by the time we use the boat) I'm a bit worried about access, I've heard there is a slip there...but not sure how easy it is to use?

Anyone have any other ideas? Is there a dry stack at Lymington maybe?

Gah! Help! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

there is a small one in Lymington, I think by Yacht Haven. Its by the town quay.
Whether you can get in, and whether its cheaper...
Further afield, MDL have one in Poole, whats probably cheaper than central Solent.
Have you looked into keeping it in the water, but a less prime lcation? Maybe ask MDL what the various £/metre are at various marinas.
Hythe is a bit cheaper as it has a lock, for example.

Tried Southampton drystack??

We was at Mercury for about 3 years but changed to try the dry stack at Hamble Point last season. Service was THAT good we are moving back to Mercury when the contract runs out at the end of the month.

For me to elaborate on what's exactly 'wrong' with Hamble Point Marina would no doubt cause a stir on here so will leave my own experiences exactly where they are.

Anyhow, was looking around at other dry stacks and found Southampton Dry Stack to be the best. Most of the team there are ex-MDL who, by the sound of it, become fed up with the corporate bull and started their own company. Never used it ourselves but have carried out extensive research into them. Going back to Mercury simply because we miss our old friends and it has the best Stella on the South Coast /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Let us know how you get on.

Hi peeps, thanks for that.

DAC, how about I summarise HP for you?

- Expensive, inflexible?
- Actual dry stack operational staff are really nice, and friendly
- Dirty area around the boats
- Too much traffic in and out
- Terrible parking for dry stack members
- Not enough pontoon space, crazily small area
- Being made to feel like a second class boater with all of the above?

Other than that, I quite like the MDL approach with free nights and now cost fuel...but it's the underlying corp attitude that comes through...

We used to be at Poole with them and they were great but it's now too far with a 5 mo baby... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Nail and head comes to mind!

Had to read your post twice just to make sure i didn't right it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I did actually kind of guess that i wasn't the only one feeling the pain.

Universal have a drystack. And a very good cafe, even does Kippers!

I understand the cafe at Universal is closed due to a rat problem, may well be open again by now.

Universal is further up the Hamble, just before Swanwick.

And I hadn't heard about a rat problem... Cafe was open on Sunday.

At the moment MDL (Saxon Wharf) on the Itchen are cheaper then Southampton Dry stack, just. Plenty of spece at them mo and useful pontoons for overnighting / maintenance. Also further away from the scrap yard so less dust and dirt.

OK, looking at both of those now. The Port Hamble one is a bit closer so less travel time to the solent..

Parking is an absolute biatch at HYS though, especially when the big racing yachts are out.

Not a problem at Universal.

there is a dry stack in portsmouth in the camber dock. (behind the roundtower). sorry cant tell you any more than that because we havent been there for about 3yrs because the council thought it would be a good idea to up the carpark from £5 to £11 for the day. ......taken my cash n custom else where!!!!!

So how are the rest of us going to learn then?
Either tell or don't post.

And what's wrong with Sparkes' operation?

Have a look at Eastlands Boatyard Bursledon just above M27 Bridge.
They do a service of storage ashore on trailer and will launch and recover if you do not want the hassle of doing it yourself.
clean tidy yard new facilities even have picnic / barbeque area in a field alongside river
