The boat has been cleared out and contents in temporary store. So much stuff! 12 years of ownership and it's a cruiser/racer without the huge storage of a cruiser. God knows what a larger hull would have let me tuck away.

Previously I have driven through France using motorways. I see by Via Michelin that I could avoid the hefty tolls by alternative routes. How sensible is that? I am a 60/65mph driver. Toddle along. Empty down, full back.

Edinburgh to Calais in one day. Leave Calais in the morning and get down to Port Napoleon later that day. Probably stay Calais before ferry back to Edinburgh next day.

Always open to suggestions.

In the summer months you are directed off the motorways by signs saying Bis Route....we have had some nice drives just by following them

You will struggle to do the second leg in one day using RN. take a break somewhere around Lyon. Not in Lyon!!!

There's no need to use the toll roads, big cities aside the roads in France are way less congested. If you use a satnav (Waze on my phone is my go to) tell it to avoid toll roads and you're good...

Dont forget to order your CritAir sticker well in advance. Order online but posted to UK via snail mail.
Hire car. I presume they sort that. They certainly charge enough for European extra.

I am a city centre dweller. Cars are best hired. The bus pass!

If hiring in Edinburgh, i wouldn't assume they will have arranged a Crit Air sticker.
EuroCar (I think that's their name) are the only company I could find who do Europe. They charge around £300 extra for taking. a car/van to France

Waze looks like it has a dodgy background. Don't want my phone to explode.

During the summer holidays......the toll booths are so overwhelmed that you can queue for hours....and the Red Cross have been known to pass out water to the motorists to keep them alive

I've queued for hours on the A6 between Dijon and Lyon albeit on winter ski season Saturdays (changeover days).

There are plenty of online services doing one way van loads much cheaper than DIY. I used one to move my stuff back from Italy.

Point me towards one. My understanding is that Brexit did those in. And to the far north?

Don't drive in France anywhere on a day when it is red or black in the area/direction you are travelling in.
Do not try to go anywhere on the 2nd of August. It is black everywhere.

Take the forecasts of hell on this web site seriously:-
Prévisions - Prévisions - Bison Futé
Very useful! Looks as though mid week is the time to travel. Weekends do look like gridlock time.

Two most upsetting things about driving a Tesla....
I have to have a crit air sticker on my windshield
I can’t drive fast when traffic is slowed down due to pollution warning
