Hi all,
I have noticed that both the prop shafts are dripping quite a bit (10ish drips a second) How much should they drip? I have heard something like 3-4 drips a minute, is this right?
P.S This dripping was possibly the cause of the battery problem I had (so Peter's say) because the bilge pumps are running quite a bit with all the water.

Flat batt -- water--pumps, sounds about right. What sort of seals do you have on the shafts. Sounds as if they're dripping too much. You could try tightening them up a bit, but it all depends on what ones you have.

If you've got ordinary sternglands 1 drip every 15 seconds about right, try nipping them up very slightly and maybe re-pack them when you come out of the water.

if you get the nuts just right. No or nearly no drips whilst parked up, But a few drips whilst going. However when stopped again. Maybe a little more drip. About half a turn does it. Course if youve not none it for ages then might need more turns. Do not do to much.

With hlb on this, sounds like they've not been done for while. Recommended on mine 1 drip every 30 seconds. Normally when I return the stb one drips more than the port but I must admit to not tightening every time cos I keep the constavolt on the domestics when away.

Sounds like they haven't been packed or tightened for a while.
About 8 drips a minute is about right. Try gently nipping them up. If you are gonna re-pack while in the water just loosen off enough to pack in a turn or two packing.

Re: Er while running

Dear all

I may be way out of line in which case flame away but I think you are all tell Moose it should be 4-8 drips per min which I agree with but only whilst running.

Ideally it should not drip or hardly at all whilst still. He did say it was dripping and flattening his battery so, it must be whilst still and bilge pump going off repeatedly. I am sure he is happier with that than a bilge full of water but...

Obviously, it would be ideal to have 4-8 drips per min while running (to keep the shaft and packing cool) and nothing at all when still but Moose may have to play with it to get the best compromise. It sounds too damn loose to me.

Sorry in advance if I've got the wrong end of the drip!

G'day Moose,
Assuming you have packing glands, adjust the nut til you get one drip every 10 to 15 seconds when the engine is running and the shaft is turning.

At the end of the run give the shaft about 4 to 6 pumps of grease and you should have no dripping at all.

Hope this helps
