Drinking with the \'other side\'

There is a gang of MoBo'ers who often meet up in a pub near Reading, and as I am currently working in the area, I invited myself along last night.

There was Wiggo, Rickp, BrendanS (who spends half his time on Scuttlebutt anyway), Derek (whose username escapes me), then Col and Mrs Col arrived just as I had to leave.

A very pleasant bunch of guys they are, too. Apart from the obvious topics, such as moorings too expensive in the Solent etc, Kim being a great bloke, it was interesting to hear some of the similarities and differences between our choice of boating.

For example...

MoBo's have problems with teak decks too. The difference is that they can get it repaired under the warranty, rather than keep the boat out of action for over a year.

Apparently, on boats where the anchor is recessed into the stem, when they hit a wave at speed, seawater is funneled in and comes flying out of the foredeck and right over the skipper on the flybridge!

When it comes to keeping the diesel tank filled during the winter, I pointed out that I have bought 120litres of diesel this year and still have 60 of it left - there was a deathly hush and black looks at this point, can't understand why?

Batteries were discussed at length too. They have to start the engine on one battery, then start the other engine from a different battery being charged by the first one. Then there is another battery just for the bowthruster and windlass, and in case any of those go flat, there is a generator but that has its own battery , because it would be useless otherwise. Somefink like that, anyway.

In summary, it was a pleasant evening - just a shame I had to leave early. I can recommend the Wheelwrights Arms, and would be more than happy to drink with the Stinkies again, assuming they allow me.

It was good to see you again Nick, and a very pleasant evening it was too.

There's a tentative plan for a 'Berks' meet over at the Crispin, near Ascot next Thursday. You'd be more than welcome to join us as an honourary Berk :)
