Drinking glasses - best none breakable ?

If you see anything odd happening on board my boat jfm I would really appreciate it if you could contact me. I did allow a long time customer of mine to use the boat recently with a husband and wife skipper and crew and it might have been those guys that you saw on the boat. Btw my customer swears blind that they didnt break any glasses

I use somebody to look after my boat because I dont have a choice. My boat doesnt justify a full time skipper and I dont want to pay for him anyway but at the same time I dont have the time or inclination to manage individual tradesmen to work on my boat so guardiennage is a half way house that usually works for me despite the potential issues

You mention living onboard which reminds me of our time in Palma with one of our previous boats. As usual I had arranged with a local company to look after the boat. After a couple of years we started to notice strange things. We were religious about emptying the holding tank at sea before we left the boat to go home but we would often come back a few weeks later to find the holding tank full. Then we noticed that many of the DVDs on the boat were displaced from their usual position and that the whisky bottles on board were miraculously being depleted. I got suspicious that somebody was living on board but of course the management company vigorously denied all knowledge. To this day I still believe that somebody was living onboard and that the management company knew about it because of course they were the only people who knew when we would be using our boat and could clear out the liveaboard before we arrived. The final chapter in this little story happened just before we left Majorca for good. We came to the boat for the final time and found a half empty bottle of whisky on the saloon table with a glass next to it. I think that was the liveaboard's way of saying cheerio

What this says to me about Antibes is that it's got some dishonest tradespeople so no different to anywhere else.

Personally I prefer to be there when tradespeople are and manage the list of people who have access to the boat myself. Not terribly satisfactory as you end up losing days of your holiday to maintenance stuff. Even with my 'regime' we've had the odd case of "I'm sure I switched that sea cock off". Fortunately, as SCM is quite a close nit community I would hope that if someone was taking the piss I'd find out.

Mike, as JFM appears to be useless at keeping an eye on your boat (:)) have you considered one of those Yacht Sentinel things or whatever they are called? Some have a PIR that will detect people on board and CCTV? I think Bart knows about them.

Yeah looks like I will have to get something like that

like you Deleted User I have someone look after the boat - two guys who have been on the island for 30 years or so. Any issues I just contact them. I cannot be bothered to try and sort everything (or in my case I sort very little) with the boat in Mallorca. I also have a foscam camera installed which alerts me if it notices movement. Works pretty well. Takes pics as well as video.

Now to order some decent glasses for the boat!

We also use glass. We go for stemless glasses for stability and also because if something does break, it's less glass to sweep up.

We use these for bubbly:

these for wine:

Cocktails are in Hurricane glasses and we have some highball glasses too. All are kept in their boxes except the wine glasses, which are kept in a draw (I cut down the box, so I have retained the bottom half and it stops them moving about in the drawer).

Just a suggestion but with people taking the p*** or potentially doing so, would it not be worth placing a hidden camera. The relatively small investment would surely pay dividends in the long run. I heard about a chap who was managing boats, charter et al, won't say who or where in the world but who was charging people to stay on board without the owners knowledge.

There was an article in one of the recent MBYs about a dealer who couldn't be bothered to untie a boat in the middle of a rafting up and instead was taking someone out for a sea trial in the first boat (awaiting handover) as it was easier. The owner, who had had motion activated CCTV installed, called the dealer whilst he was preparing to cast off wanting to know what two people were doing on his boat with a dog!
