Hi ,
We have had a busy boat so far and next week some “posh “ guests arrive .
Up to now we use some sort of plastic glasses but they have all gone a cloudy colour ,we think it’s the Pastis .If so apart from the horrible opaqueness think about what’s being ingested inadvertently?
I don,t leave bottles plastic water in the car due to the release of poly phenols ( or something nasty ) .
So these plastic “ glasses “ on the boat seem a contradiction.

Wife reckons polycarbonate can take multiple dishwasher attacks and hopefully cope with Pastis without dissolving?

What’s everybody else using on board .

Is there a special ,if so named brand that’s superior or do we need to get real glass and be dammed if they inevitably break ?

Er nope but not because they've been broken but because a few have gone walkabout like a few other things on my boat in recent months

That's a bummer Mike. I assume that your boat is fairly secure so it must be someone that has access to them? Unless it was one of those dodgy buggers you had on board the other week. Still, the thought that someone that you trust could be nicking them is a little upsetting.

If it's any consolation, I've had some life jackets nicked!

Yes it is a bummer. We've lost some tools and Ferretti branded glasses in the last few months. As you know in the Med, you're asking all sorts of people to do stuff on your boat and you've got no control over them

If I can help with the glasses please let me know. Also, just noticed on your old mosquito screen thread you had some of them pinched too. Almost like someone is stealing to order.

Well in defence of Antibes, this has nothing to do with Antibes. Mike chooses (as he perfectly can- no criticism from me) to manage his boat through an arranger, and the folks who go on it are unknown to him and different people every time. I see them all the time and have even wondered whether some of them sleep on board occasionally (what else to conclude when I see guy&girl board at 11pm?).

The “things going missing” problem doesnt happen with other boat management regimes obviously. Anyway, no big deal, and my point is that this has nothing to do with Antibes.

I did allow a long time customer of mine to use the boat recently with a husband and wife skipper and crew and it might have been those guys that you saw on the boat. Btw my customer swears blind that they didnt break any glasses

I use somebody to look after my boat because I dont have a choice. My boat doesnt justify a full time skipper and I dont want to pay for him anyway but at the same time I dont have the time or inclination to manage individual tradesmen to work on my boat so guardiennage is a half way house that usually works for me despite the potential issues

You mention living onboard which reminds me of our time in Palma with one of our previous boats. As usual I had arranged with a local company to look after the boat. After a couple of years we started to notice strange things. We were religious about emptying the holding tank at sea before we left the boat to go home but we would often come back a few weeks later to find the holding tank full. Then we noticed that many of the DVDs on the boat were displaced from their usual position and that the whisky bottles on board were miraculously being depleted. I got suspicious that somebody was living on board but of course the management company vigorously denied all knowledge. To this day I still believe that somebody was living onboard and that the management company knew about it because of course they were the only people who knew when we would be using our boat and could clear out the liveaboard before we arrived. The final chapter in this little story happened just before we left Majorca for good. We came to the boat for the final time and found a half empty bottle of whisky on the saloon table with a glass next to it. I think that was the liveaboard's way of saying cheerio

Just a suggestion but with people taking the p*** or potentially doing so, would it not be worth placing a hidden camera. The relatively small investment would surely pay dividends in the long run. I heard about a chap who was managing boats, charter et al, won't say who or where in the world but who was charging people to stay on board without the owners knowledge.
