Thought i had found the problem after speaking to dealer.
Heater started shutting down when sailing, then altogether,Pump clicking but I could see the filter was empty so clearly a fuel supply fault, stuck feed line into a fuel can held above the pump and heater worked fine.
Dealer reckoned the tank pipe too large bore, been ok for five years but i could run with that figuring pump suction perhaps diminishing with age .
So fitted proper tank feed pipe.
Same problem apart from now it wont even pump with the feed pipe in a the can.
I have checked the pipes and filter clear.
Grrr!
Grrr !

Heater make and model please, pumps are different so it would be a help, advice on reducing the dip tube to 2mm bore was sound but the pump may have a fault or if an Eber may have an inlet filter blockage. If a Webast which is what I suspect due to the description of a clear seperate filter then it may well be worn, the fact that it would pump with a slight head and had been struggling with too larger bore points that way. Have you tried using a Pela or similar to get it as far as the pump? it can take a number of attempts to get the fuel up just using the dosing pump from dry. Good news is that Webasto pumps can be had from Anglia Postal Parts on eBay for around £50 new, not Webasto genuine but I tested one for a cusomer and it was accurate in both dosing and pressure.

Webasto 2000 airtop.
I sucked diesel up the pipe and the pump got to it the heater which fired up fine till the diesel in the line ran out.
I have taken pump home and will test it with some clear pipe so i can see whats going on.
Have tried many attempts.
Are all the Webasto pumps the same?
Thanks for your advice David.

Not all the same but the ones for the later AT range and TT range are, so the one that Anglia sell are fine for an AT2000. Unlike Eber the ECU determines the fuel rather than the pump size, if you want to borrow a known good pump to confirm just PM me.
