Drill Chuck Extender?

My chart table has a hinged lid, with a 45mm deep space underneath. I want to drill a 44mm hole in the side of this space, into the electrics locker. The problem is that there is a 220mm section between them that does not hinge, and even my smallest drill won't fit in the gap. Too much stuff in the way to drill from the locker.

Suggestions?

Get a friend with a welder or some epoxy and then attach a metal extension rod to the drill bit. Alternatively take a bit of pipe of the right diameter and file teeth into it for drilling. It should be easy enough to fix it to a drill bit or just to the chuck.

Fit one of these into the arbour or your 44mm dia hole saw then drill as normal.

But you don't normally take my suggestions anyway

I also have a bit extension like used to be used to drill for the stern tune on wooden boats long ago that could be used to fit in the standard hole saw arbour drill.

I also made up and extension by welding a 3/8" UNF dolt to a long 10MM dia rod a fitted a standard 10mm drill chuck as an extension

I have several ways in my workshop at home.

I'd be thinking along the lines of a flexible drive too -- http://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-6mm-flexible-drill-shaft_p6290125. Screw it into the tool's chuck, then fit your bit (or hole saw) into the chuck on the end of the cable. It doesn't have to be held dead straight, but keep it reasonably taut. If it's allowed to double back on itself under power it'll do a double twist and wreak havoc.

Extension drives for hole saw arbors are widely available, as are forstner bit extensions, I have various lengths, your small quite small extra reach would be easily accommodated.

Actually, now I look at the photo' I have done exactly that with a 32mm forstner and extention for the large Garmin grommet in the same situation

I've got a bunch of 300mm extenders at home; and a lathe, welder, drill press... None of them are to hand.

I bought a flat drill with a 7mm shaft and ¼" hex shank, hoping to use it with my ¼" hex extension having bored out the arbour to 7mm (I've got a spare). After 10 minutes of drilling I'd gone in about 2mm, so will try to find someone with a drill press.

The "quite small extra reach" made me smile, I bought the extenders to drill down from the loft into my stud walls, by 6 feet!

I have once adapted parts of a 1/4 drive socket set to extend a hole cutter using a length of 6mm square bar in the chuck and a suitable fitting and socket on the arbour probably a long socket would give more grip. Also round bar/rod could be ground to square at socket end with slight taper for force fit .

The hole saw arbour I have has a hexagonal shaft that normally fits into a chuck, it would be possible to fit a hex socket onto the shaft of the hole saw then fit the end of the 1/4" drive extension into a drill chuck thus extending the hole saw reach.

That's exactly what the summarily rejected shank extender (which I have used in exactly the same circumstance) I recommended earlier does, available in various lengths at very little cost and quick delivery or available from local hardware suppliers, but hey ho.... I begin to see what you men it post # 5

Point taken I was just trying to suggest a method if your stuck out in the boondocks maybe with a grinder at best If you are round the corner to Screwfix they have a good selection of 300mm extensions from just over a quid http://www.screwfix.com/p/flat-bit-300mm-extension/16769
