I’m hoping to fit a new cable soon and everyone says it’s a painful job. Part of the existing cable remains and I’m thinking about using this to pull the new one through. Has this been done and is it best to start at the drive side or vice versa?

I have always found it best to start outside, I put two nuts on the end locked together and greased otherwise the bare threaded end digs into the rubber tube as you try to get it past the bend on the inside of the transom. Also pull the inner cable outwards so that the straight unbending section is as short as possible.

Thank you, I will do exactly that.

I’m struggling with this, I cannot pass the cable from either end, it seems to hit a dead end near the exterior exit. Starting from the exterior, I can’t easily push it through the tube so I have been trying for quite a while from the inside. The two nuts on the end helped but I have now removed them and ground a polished dome on the cable end. Still can’t do it with loads of grease. Anymore tips please?

I thought you might be back .
So the correct way is to ,
Remove the air filter box.
Breather filter housing .
Exhaust elbow with rubber hose , undo bottom clamp .
Support bracket vertical .
90degree rubber air inlet hose between air box and turbo inlet pipe .
Rear cover across back of engine .

You can then see where the shift cable tube passes through the transom shield, you will see the bend where the metal part of the cable won’t pass through without bending it , the price of the cable makes you want to do it the correct way to avoid shall we say disappointment.

Whoever designed this engine package has no idea on design.

No idea what boat you have but I hope it’s one that’s accessible.

Thank you very much for your very detailed instructions. It’s a Jeanneau NC9 with D4-260. I don’t think I will have enough time to do this before she’s back on the water, I will have to go without for a season. What an unbelievable rigmarole for running a cable, zero points for Jeanneau and VOP for this.
