Hi all
I have an Ad41a with dp290 1990 model outdrives just had the boat out the water for a full leg service including ram/cylinder seals boats back in water now, legs go up and down fine when stationery but when in gear say reverse the leg will lift up, the catches are locked in, it seems to be pulling the rams/cylinders out, I can pull the leg back down with the button while reversing any ideas?? I have no leaks

No valves on the early rams as it has a reverse latch system that’s obviously not set up correctly or the sprigs are missing , looks like boat out the water again .

Hi
The latch works fine as we have tried a strap around the leg and it definitely locks in, it's pulling the ram arms out for some reason and the plate

Thanks for the advice, I just run it up and down 5 times still the same😬
Is it both sides ? I’m thinking when the rams were rebuilt a the piston seals were damaged allowing oil to pass inside the cylinder , there is a special tool used to rebuild the rams but take note , Volvo have never sold seal kits for rams , all thats ever been available is aftermarket ones of which can be sub standard .
The only other possibility is that the lock out valves in the trim pump have corroded away , try clamping the hoses to the trim pump then test , if the drive still lifts it’s the rams at fault . You can also raise the drives , clamp the hoses and see how long it takes for the drives to drop, if they drop it’s the rams .

Yes it is both sides they have always dropped since I've owned the boat when moving forward of the river the legs would always after 10mins or so drop to -6 but in reverse they only moved slightly since the new seals it will lift to 40+ if I let it but I can hold the trim button down and it will stop it lifting not ideal, it's really annoying I'm going to cap the lines tomorrow and try what you mentioned cheers

Check that reverse catch again. It can seemingly work on occasion and just hang on…but not catch hold other times, when the steering is at some certain positions.

I had this problem when I replaced the seals on my DP290, I bought them off ebay, the only ones available at the time, but they were of poor quality, they raised in reverse, and dropped to -4 in forward drive, no leaks just poor quality seals.

So it was out of the water again and a seal kit from Repower Marine and all was fine afterwards.
