Doyle Sails

I have a couple of Doyle finn sails, older Dacron type, still in beautiful condition and will last forever. Now out of fashion and not competitive. Doyle are one of the larger sail firms about, American and cater for everybody and have lofts all around the world. They are also customers of CSF, China Sail Factory like many of the major sail makers so you may get Chinese or local sails made. I have just taken delivery of a superb furling genoa from CSF through a local sailmaker.

I bought a Swing batten main and genoa from Doyles in 2006 and both are still in great shape. I have in-mast furling on my 31 ft Beneteau and the Swing batten system works a treat and has never once jammed. The sail sets beautifully as does the genny. I have no connection with the company but I would have no hesitation in recommending them.

They made a fully batterned main and genoa for my Sadler 34 about 8 years ago. Excellent sails which have lasted well.

I'm swithering between Hyde & Doyles, 8.77 Marblehead,8.03 HM LA or Ocean 753. Decisions , decisions!!

Any feedback on these cloths?

Yes, good

I had a heavy staysail built by them 10 years ago. It's now got 1 small patch. Tough and serviceable and it's been on there for almost 50,000 miles. I had it the Shamrock Quay loft. I don't know if they are as good as they used to be, but technically they used to set the pace - I believe they were first with the 3DL approach, which is being adopted I think by Boeing.

We have four sails by Doyle, No1, No3, main (4 years old) and a crusing chute (3 years old).

No1 and No3 are their crusing laminate in a tri cut, main is standard old dacron.

To be honest I'm not overly impressed with the cruising laminate, gets dirty very easily, difficult to clean, especially where the seams overlap. They have both needed repairing, where the main is still fine.

Cut is Ok on all of them, but to be honest I expected better. In all cases the leech is far too open. We need the No 1 cut especially to clear our top spreader and it was never really done properly, so still fouls it when in tight.

Unless you are racing go with Dacron and dont bother with any of the laminates. They cost a lot more and dont last as long; but do hold their shape!!

After sales is also fairly luke warm.

I would buy from them again, but only if the price was less than other like for like quotes I received. I certainly wouldnt buy from them because they are Doyle!
