Downsizing - thinking of living on a boat instead.

Boats, particularly seagoing ones are not meant to be homes, and in the UK coastal marinas are not residential. While people living on boats still exist, the numbers are declining partly because marinas are being forced to abide by their planning permission which is almost always non residential. As suggested inland waterways are different in that some moorings and marinas are residential, and canal boats are more geared to permanent living, particularly the wide beam ones that can use small parts of the system, mainly in the north. However inevitably demand for permanent berths is high so actually finding one is difficult and sometimes requires buying a boat with the mooring.
Yes ive found this out, so ive had to have a change of plan, so now its a proper boat, with an apartment closely so I can easily get between the two. Thankyou

Sorry to rain on your parade, but there have been several posts on here lately about the increasing difficulty of living aboard in UK marinas.
In your situation and with your budget, I'd think about a nice flat in a managed block - secure when you're not there and external maintenance taken care of.
Also the advantage of a UK postal address and an increasing asset (rather than the other way round with a boat).

Yes, im on it, this is what im doing......

Have a look at Aquaholic's Youtube channel - good, comprehensive reviews of a plethora of motor boats. If you do go down the route of flat & boat I'd have thought a modern 8-10 metre mobo (off the top of my head Jeanneau Merry Fisher or similar?) might suit - easy to handle, comfortable enough & capable of channel crossing. Ask on the mobo forum for advice about specific boats, most of us on here are sailors.
Good luck...:)

Just wondering why you (or anyone come to that) would want a home in UK when you have the option of EU? What's wrong with staying in Spain longer?
Better weather, less xxxxxxx (redacted) people, lower cost of living...

As well as still wanting a UK base, there are advantages to maintaining UK home, tax residence, health and end of life care, etc. We downsized house to 2 bed bungalow with very small garden, virtually maintenance free except for cutting grass every couple of weeks which we pay a lawn service for. Just lock the door and leave it for roughly half the year. Living in an apartment full time would drive me nuts, need some space and man cave.

Because I love the UK equally, Spain for me only has a couple of benefits the weather and the Spanish people.Like the UK there is lots wrong with Spain, but lots that are right, and a mixture of the two suits me fine, I wouldn't want to be full time in either country , but splitting my time between the two gives me the balance I need

Well I don't need a man cave as im a woman, and I suppose my woman cave is the kitchen lol!Purchased a two bed apartment at the weekend in Chichester, no garden, which will reduce the budget for the boat, now ive decided liveaboart is not an option.
