Well, after my post last week about Ramsgate I am now stuck in Dover. Bl**dy weather. Was hoping to get over to Calais this weekend but no chance with a solid F6 in the channel. After Dover, Ramsgate shines as a beacon of sophistication and prosperity. The marina here is good and a bit cheaper than Ramsgate, and I get a Trans Manche discout or whatever it's called these days, but the town! What a complete dump! Luckily some local friends took pity on me a sprited me away for the weekend. Now back on board in the Granville Dock with the wind howling in the rigging. Hoping it will moderate as forecast tomorrow and I can get up to Ramsgate or over to Calais. I don't think I can stand another carp summer. I'd sell the boat and buy a share in one somewhere warm, I've got the bloody heater on in June for god's sake! Only the market for old boats is tanked and I'd probably have to give her away. Not a happy sailor!!

If you walk all the way up the High St,there is a secondhand bookshop which has some old nautical books.
What's a transmanche discount,is it a discount the marina gives for channel crossers? If so I've lucked out!
I've been stuck in Dunkerque a few days, but it feels like I know the town so well,I might as well buy a taxi and earn some money.
Hopefully Oostende tomorrow if it goes down to the promised N3.

Been gale bound in Dover, loved every minute of it. Walked down the western breakwater watching the sea crashing over the wall and the cruise ship car park!
Walked along the beach to Shakespeare cliff over stage railway and back down the cliff.
Walked up to the castle and underground tunnels - very good. Next time will do the napoleonic fort and museum.
Mind you, it was warm and sunny with the SW gale but same time of year (on my way to RTI race in 2008!)

Royal Cinque ports YC is worth a visit, not as plush as Royal Temple in Ramsgate but pretty good and in our experience, friendly. Reasonable curry house too if you go through the underpass (under the dual carriageway). Cant recall the name but it looks unprepossessing. Made of concrete, India House? Castle is worth a look round and if the weather is a little better its a nice walk up to the coastguard station. Oh, also the bronze age boat museum is a must.

There is also a small chandlery of the old fashioned sort which featured on one of Griff Rhys Jones programmes.

We too have been caught in Dover, don't enjoy it like Ramsgate, too many dropouts but it can be bearable

Have you been to the pub/restaurant overlooking the marina - can't remember it's name but food and company was good there - the chips was the best I have had in ages

I'm guessing you're referring to Cullins Yard which is built in an old engineering workshop and stuffed to the rafters, literally, with all sorts of memorbilia. Loved the place!

Sharpe & Enright is a hoot too, especially if you get one of the older members of staff started on how things were in the old days :)

Cullins Yard -That's the place right on the doorstep - well worth the visit to Dover Marina just to go to this place

My experience of Cullins yard is mixed on the food front, but they do serve a nice pint.
Hythe bay Restaurant the one on the beach, part of the Sports centre is overpriced with mediocre food but has interesting views.
The best Indian/Bangla restaurant is Cinnamon Island, just on the left before you go into the underpass to town.
Il Rustico is a more than acceptable Italian.
Well priced bar food can be found in the Best Western on the seafront, nice views as well.

But I do agree that Dover as a Town is a bit of a dump, but it's only 20 minutes drive, the marina is secure with helpful staff.

I like Dover.Cinnamon Island is great curry(but get there early)and the chippy in Castle Street is a gem.The town is typical down at heel(read derelict)seaport but there is masses of interesting history and one of the top ten best castles in the world. You need to be fit to get up the hills though, but what great views, especially for anyone interested in the sea.Even the drop outs are harmless compared to the professional scrotes I am used to here in the big smoke.

Having been stuck at both over the last few years I have come to appreciate the benifit of the Train and Bus services at Dover and Ramsgate, If at Ramsgate we walk along the cliffs to Broadstairs, or get the bus to Sandwich (very nice little town) or have a treat and jump on the train to Canterbury for the day. Plenty to do if you think on it, only problem is that it still doesnt beat sailing :)

After a full day in dock at Dover, it was Saturday,

You can easily come away with the impression Dover is closed! However, a Belgian lot agree the Castle tour is brilliant, we agree the YC is comfortable and welcoming, the Marina elves very helpful and cheerful all day and if everywhere was the same we would be poorer.

Also, brilliant for fishing tackle shops.

Worth noting that you can anchor in the harbour as well.

Cheers

Just a shame to stand in water whilst having a shower
