dover or ramsgate

Ramsgate is only OK if you can moor somewhere other than on the outside of the long visitors pontoon.
If you are stuck on there you can get quite a bit of swell coming in from the entrance and a huge amount of wash from the commercial vessels that don't slow down properly as they come in. Take it from me, we have had to put up with that a couple of years ago..... We also saw numerous boats on a MBM rally that were rafted up along there getting bashed against each other because of the wash. I'm sure there were a couple that took a bit of damage.
I would rather 'suffer' the lorries and the lock at Dover than go through that again. It's a shame as we really like Ramsgate and there are loads of great places to eat.

IMHO it would be Ramsgate. The Pizza Express just outside the marina is good. Walk into Broadstairs and there is a fabulous Pizza place on the High Street so it's good for an early evening walk and then at taxi back.

More pubs and shops in walking distance and no huge dual carriageway to cross.

And who cares about Waitrose? Ramsgate has a Wilkinsons!
.......and a Waitrose

Probably a bit late to this one, I dislike Ramsgate.

Restaurants in Dover; Cinnamon Island just round from De Bradelei wharf, very good and moderate prices (Bangla/Indian) better than the Light of India. The Arlington on Snargate, Brit style can be very good but patchy. Hythe Bay, overlooking the harbour in the big sports centre, good but top of the price range, nice views.

For a pint wouldn't recommend any pubs , but you can get a decent pint in Cullins yard, and if you drink enough the food is passable.

For breakfasts the Greasy spoon just by the chandlers on Snargate is now pretty good... It was ****e.

If you give me notice you can have the benefit of a dedicated freeloader coming down to critique your drinks cabinet.

You can anchor in Dover if you want to wait for the tide.Apart from that both are characterful harbours with Dover having a far better marina but Rambo having a cute town centre on your doorstep.

thanks all for the tips

we went straight to brighton in the end and from there we arrived in jersey st heiler yesterday to glorious sunshine.

going to be here for a few weeks...
water is soooo clean

Huh
We got as far as Stangate Creek[where the water is not so clean], spent a day gale bound and trying to fix electrical stuff then came back to Burnham to get it sorted properly.
Perhaps motor boats do have good points then:D

I would have to say Ramsgate but certainly would not have said this prior to going. We usually go to Dover but Ramsgate has far more to offer. Even in poor weather we did not move too much in the Marina. In Ramsgate it is only 5 minutes to the town centre whereas in Dover you have to walk for 20 minutes across a busy main road. In Ramsgate marina you have a fantastic breakfast cafe which does a full English for around £3.85 plus there is the Belgian Cafe which is great for its live music. Ramsgate certainly has more Chandlery facilities and the showers in the tidal marina are certainly better than Dover's Tidal Marina. If you have never been to Ramsgate certainly give it a try but watch the entrance at low water as it is narrow.

Good Luck.
