Well it is a worry .. If Tony had'nt done as George told him, would there have been cruise missiles heading towards Basildon?

Ere!

Whilst I think that a missile strike on Basildon would be a good thing can I have a bit of notice so I can go home and avoid being collateral damage!

I won't reckon to see too many visits of this nature at my home port - Porthmadog. Perhaps a tad sandy and shallow for them.

Spring tide maybe...well...errr....OK - forget it.

I\'ve had the VIP tour....

Many years ago as a child, due to my family apparently being quite important (dunno about important, self-important lot I can attest to!) I got a VIP tour of the Enterprise. Even got to sit in the Captain's chair and in an F-14 Tomcat fighter jet and take pics. Unbelievably massive, a real floating city that has to support 5,000 crew and 90 planes. Hard to believe something that size can even float, let alone cruise at over 30 knots. Must be nice not to have to refuel as well!

The most impressive thing to me as a child was just stepping aboard. She was anchored well outside the harbour due to her draft, and we had to take a launch out in horrendous weather conditions. It was a sizable launch, 60 feet at least, and the seas were so rough that many of the visitors aboard were getting seasick on the way. When we got out to the Enterprise, came into her lee and stepped onto the gangway, it was as if we had stepped back ashore, she was so massive that there was hardly any motion at all even in the bad conditions.

I recall one of her previous Captains (defintely not Kirk or Picard) losing his command when he ran her aground after coming under the Golden Gate bridge into her home port of Alameda. I bet their running gear was fine though!

Sailed a Hustler 25 raggy under the anchor chain of the Dwight D Eisenhower while she was anchored off Portsmouth, in the early 80s. (Because it was there - before you ask). Don't suppose we'd get away with that now...

<hr width=100% size=1>my opinion is complete rubbish, probably.

Re: don\'t play chicken with this!!!!!!!

Julie, there has been a significant sharpening up of security round any large boat.

If anybody makes a fast unexpected approach to a large vessel in the current climate they are being very irresponsible. Obviously caution and discretion (and self preservation!) has to be the guide.

I heard that the crew of the US boat you pictured spent an absolute fortune in Pompey. 'Excuse me sir may we collect your mooring fees?'

Re: don\'t play chicken with this!!!!!!!

While on QHM patrol on Sunday morning , there were constant calls from Enterprise re boats getting to close - One particular one made reference to "two high speed surface contacts coming down either side" This call was made to MOD police launch. There were keeping radar contact as well as "eyeball".

Re: don\'t play chicken with this!!!!!!!

errrr, yes. Been there, done that!

Last year, after Mercury meet, headed off to see the Harry S Truman. Grotty day, and visibility down to a few hundred yards. So put rough waypoint into plotter, and off I went at 40ish knts. Suddenly visibility cleared up, and there it was ahead.....as were half a dozen patrol vessels coming at me from all directions!! Did a 90 deg turn and didn't attempt to go any closer. I wonder when they'd have started shooting if the visibility hadn't cleared, and I'd not seen the situation developing, and not turned away in good time
