Don't mix antifoul thinners

Had a bit of a mare with the antifoul this weekend. I had 1/3 tin of Hempel Cruiser Performer left from last year which was a little thick so I thinned it with International No. 3 antifoul thinners. The paint was coming off the Anza roller in whispy cobweb type threads like a horror movie. Made a mess of everywhere it was applied. Thankfully some knowledgable assistance was around to tell me what I'd done wrong and a new tin went on like a dream. I'm sure plenty of you knew this already but as they both use the same description numbers, and the International thinners do clean Hempel paint off the brushes, I wasn't expecting a problem.

I've used Hempel Cruiser Performer for a number of seasons. My experience is that it is prone to this "cobweb" effect without thinning. In fact I'm surprised that your 2nd. tin didn't do this. Seems to be worse if you roller it out too much.
I don't think your thinners were to blame.

Ah, so maybe something else then. I could try thinning a small amount from the new tin with International thinners and see what happens, but realistically it's such an unpleasant job I'm not likely to touch it for another 12 months.

Having just rollered a tin-full of Cruising performer onto the bottom of my boat, I think the way to stop it doing this is to make sure your roller is always well loaded with paint - keep slapping it on!

... so I thinned it with International No. 3 antifoul thinners.

As I understand it, No.1 is just ordinary cellulose thinners. Numbers above that are for special purposes. Can't remember what No.3 is, but I've only ever anti-fouled with anything other than no.1 where it has been hard racing anti-foul, including two-part.

Because on warm days or even just days with dry air , the thinners allready in paint can evaporate quickly and thicken paint , i had to thin cruiser uno once ,which says not to , but would have needed a trowel , funnily of the three times ive used it this application worked the best !

No, Thinners No 1 is basically white spirit. No 3 is xylene or a similar solvent.

International and Hempel no3 thinners are different. Hempel is dimethyl benzene and ethyl benzene. International no 3 is light, aromatic solvent naphtha and trimethylbenzene.
I doubt if the difference would explain the OP's experience though.

I have used Seago, International and some other No 3 thinners with International. Nautical (same company) and XM antifouling, and no combination has given problems.
