Does anyone have any good ideas on how to encourage a dog to pee on the front deck?

I guess this sounds gross to some people, but we like to spend time at anchor and having to go to shore every time is a bit of a hassel.

Sensible ideas only, unless they are very funny.

Thanks Fergus:)

Try peeing on the front deck yourself with the dog beside you; repeat a few times. S/he will probably get the message (how long it takes to sink in [the idea that is] depends on how bright your dog is).

Peeing yourself (not literally of course!) is one idea, our old dog always has to mark after I've had a pee outside.

another suggestion might be to dig up a clump of grass that has been peed on by other dogs, bungging it in a pot and keeping on the boat?

Could we have a vid of your attempts??

two questions, do you have to cock your leg to encourage mimicking and would you advocate this method of training for number two's

Young dogs of both sexes squat to pee; whether you do is up to you, but standing with one leg cocked in a force 6 could provide a degree of amusement for the crew. For No. 2's you certainly could demonstrate by example, although you might find it less chilly if instead you took a plastic bag, collected a sample of your dog's droppings and placed them on the foredeck.

don't know how, but we've managed to get the dog to pee on the front deck, and to do poo's that conveniently blew off & left not a mark

(not to anyone else's boat)

Basic obedience really.Train the dog at home to always go in the same place ,use a small tray in the area which you can transfer to boat until he associates tray with designated area.
our dogs would go on command in a designated area.
hope this doesn't sound too smug.just takes some time

We have had 2 dogs that peed and the other quite happily into a flat plastic tray with a section of turf in it. used to leave the tray on the foredeck when not sailing and the turf survived quite happily for a full season, When sailing we used to place the tray in a locker on the foredeck. To start the process I peed onto the grass and the two dogs (succesive dogs) quickly got the idea. We also used a piece of astroturf for a while and this was easy to wash out in the sea.
However current dog totally refuse to go unless absolutely desperate but cleverly chooses not to drink water at all until it appears we are going ashore.
It is a problem and I have had a couple of late night trips ashore that were not really safe in a tender due to wind/weather/waves and I am now resolved that this season I am not going to put myself at risk in this way and the dog will have to cross its legs or go on the deck!

Wow, and almost all sensible. I am thinking that I will start with the peeing on the foredeck myself with the dog there.

Might wait until night time, or in a quite cove somewhere so as to avoid putting off the neighbours.

As for filming it mmmm, not so sure think that I might get done for something and have the dog taken away which would upset the wife.

No2's, well figure on one step at a time, did see a dog once that did them over the side straight into the sea, often wondered how the owner trained that, maybe leading by example as well.

Anyhow, thank you all for your input, with the weather set fair we’re off tomorrow, yippee.

Will report back on our return.

Fergus

So we are back from 6 nights on the boat with the Dog. The good news is that she (the dog) loved it.

We opted for the cat litter tray with a lump of turf from the garden, followed the advise of peeing on it myself to show the dog what to do.

Apologies to any other boaters who had to watch this.

Did the dog pee on it? Did she boll***s, not a hope, she sat on it, sniffed it, look quizzically at it and then gave me a look like 'You seriously expect me to use that, get rowing Dad!'

We tried and tried but to no avail, so the turf is now planted back in the garden.

Not sure where to go from here.

Warning, Facetious answer coming up ------- Plant a tree on the fore-deck!
I now - too obvious!!!

...and they just get in the way ...

Entirely predictable. Our dog refused point blank to pee/poo anywhere on the boat for 10yrs despite us trying every trick in the book. Most of them have cast iron bladders anyway. Our dog once lasted 3 days on the boat without relieving himself; I even tried holding his backside over the side of the boat but to no avail. When we did finally manage to get him ashore, the look of relief on his face was priceless

LoL, we tried the holding her over the back :) the result was a lot of shaking, think she thought we were going to drop her in.

The only good news is that when she realy has to go she starts chating to herself and then comes and gives me a prod.

the things we do
