Following on from the dog lifejacket thread, you will know that my lab/collie has a nasty habit of falling off the boat! One particular problem area is getting on and off. I am too tight to buy a passerelle (!) and was wondering if anyone had found a suitable doggy ramp for getting to and from the boat/bank/marina...otherwise I am going to have to make one and that could be a disaster!!!

We bought a Petstep and used it all the time on our last boat. www.petstep.com
Our Border Collie has had no problem getting on and off our 420 Sealine but we have a teak bathing platform which is non-slip.

:D

Just a piece of wood, bit screwed across the boat end with some holes for rope, and it won't fall off. Works well, make one for a tenner, and it won't chomp the gelcoat when manhandled

I knew someone would have an answer! Thanks Chill! I am planning to do the teak decking next winter...some matting will have to do for the time being.

If you wanted to try ours before ordering one just let me know.

You can get the teak from Wattsons they should have the original drawings on their system.

Boarder Collie ?

I made one for our old Labrador, a lovely bit of woodwork with footgrips and all - but she wouldn't use it - something to do with not feeling secure with nothing to the sides. still had to lift her on, but she'd jump off OK.

I have a similar problem loading an ancient collie into a Landrover at the back.

I am considering an aluminium motorcycle ramp.

Might be a bit cheaper on eBay :)

I use exactly the same motorcycle ramp for our dog. The one thing you need to be aware of are the sharp(ish) pressings all the way down the ramp which catches on their claws. These pressings are very similar to a super large cheese grater!

This was overcome by buying a roll of maroon carpeting strip from Asda, £9.98 (2 x ½ metre) only colour they had although they sell grey) and cutting to fit the width and length of the ramp and using tie-wraps to fix carpet to ramp. It works perfectly and doubles as a ramp to allow down down the steep companionway into the saloon. ;)

Fortunately she's a slim 26 kg's (the dog not the wife!)
