Hi Guys
Having sold up in the Med I'm proposing buying a 27 to 29 foot something e.g. Moody 27 bilge keeler, for some weekend Uk sailing but I also intend to have a dog.

So please tell me the hazards of having a dog on board, how you deal with them, and is there any breed that you would recommend? Needs to be able to help with fenders!

Cheers!

Pete

A number of long distance boats I have seen have dogs on board all were small terriers. The dog needs a lifejacket with a loop on top and tether to clip on. Some boats put netting around all their stanchions. There also must be a safe place to sleep with a lee cloth on a bunk or on the floor where the bed can't move.

I have met many boats with dogs on board and the dogs don't seem to mind. Often I've noticed that the boat and occasionally heir owners all start to have the odour of a kennel which they seem to not notice.

Our dogs live in the cockpit. They rarely go down below. Maybe the cockpit smells like a kennel.....

Would recommend a smaller dog if possible as easier to lift out of water/dinghy etc particularly if when older they cannot access by themselves so would otherwise need a ramp , eats less food and takes up less space on board. Ideally any canine crew would have their own cabin ( they don't mind sharing with cushions etc though ) but also need space for their lifejacket/harness etc /toys/bonios etc plus their own towels . Ideally you might find a Moody with a cockpit shower to wash down and a smaller dog is easier to keep clean and clean in cockpit Some dogs are more intelligent than others and some shed hair so a small/intelligent non shedding variety might be advisable . Spaniels are intelligent so able to fetch items and smallish but shed hair so a spaniel /poodle cross maybe ?

I think you find anyone who has a animal in a house or boat will have some smell , for us who do keep pets after a while we no longer notice the smell and only if someone mention it register there may be a smell , but it's part of keep a pet . In the end the enjoyment we get from having a pet out right the problem of someone coming into your home noticing it .
