Does your XM dehumidifier work?

Sorry for the thread hijack -- it is somewhat related -- I have one of these which I inherited from the PO.

Mine works and fills the tank. Draining into a tank is no good if you're not on board. There is a rubber plug on the back which seems like it might be designed for direct hose attachment to drain it directly into a sink. But when I pull out the plug, nothing comes out. Is there a switch or diverter valve or something? I have no manual and haven't been able to find one online. Thanks for any hints.

You take the plug out of the back and use it to plug the drain underneath that goes into the internal tank - this diverts the water to the back drain. Put a bit of hose onto the drain on the back.

Hi Dockhead, No worries just take the rubber plug out of the back and put it into the hole inside - just like the man says.

I manage to get my unit working again with a fan motor from a canabalised old unit. Lucky for me that I used to service this type of stuff and knew what needed to be done. I also acquired spares of all major parts except the compressor.

As I write I am advising anyone with one of these units to send it back if there is the slightest sign of anything wrong. The units have a track record and I have experience of generic manufactured goods from China.

The gear I was involved with had a CE Mark issued by a testing house in China with all the necessary paperwork so it should have been top line! It was sent to a UK testing house who found 15 major defects any one of which would have failed it and much worse the unit had not been designed for the UK power supply - the makers did not know the difference and the Chinese testing house "missed the defects ??????????

One Chandlery I spoke to said they had 5 out of a batch of 10 that failed during testing prior to sale. They had previously had two returned in a very short time. So decided to check all of the remaining stock: apparently 7 out of 10 were defective!

Thanks guys! I've only had the unit for 3 years and never knew how to use it!

Good luck getting satisfaction with your problems.

I had a B&Q unit which worked flawlessly for 3 years 24/7 and finally broke last summer. I believe that after a while the piping solders start rusting and eventually leak the coolant. It was a very good and quiet unit that I had purchased for £60 in 2008. Now it is hard to find one for less than £100.

My new one is a De Longhi that I have purchased on eBay. It is better than the B&Q unit because it does have a washable air filter, but it is very noisy. Though the noise does not bother me because I leave it running 24/7 on medium/low setting (that is about 70-80% humidity on my hygrometer) only when I am not on-board.

I expect that this one too will go one day because the compressor and piping inside are all the same an built of soft steel, but I hope that it will give me at least another three years.

Both the above units incorporate an hygrometer so they stop once reached the moisture level required and start again when necessary.

Remove the plug and fit a short cut of garden hose that drains in the sink. Also you must take care of keeping the unit level, if the drain is just slightly tilted above then the water will continue to fill the tank. I do use cloths to wedge the unit on the galley's sink to that it drains from the hose.
