I have heard of people buying rope from a cheap source and it didn't stand up to a short period of use, so maybe you should.

That rope is 'good value' and listed as good for sheets.
I would not be surprised if it was too stretchy for a halyard.

The are other respectable brands than Marlow.
But at that price, it's almost worth buying a length and if it's stretchy, it will be handy for mooring or something.

Have bought rope on a certain Ebay shop, mooring lines , and they chaffed through first big storm:ambivalence:
Put on the old mooring ropes cause Im a hoarder , and they have lasted all winter with little chaff present,
The quality did seem poor , as the old saying goes if its to good an offer then walk away. Guess who never walked :nonchalance:

I buy all my rope from Jimmy Green in Beer. OK they are down the road and I can ring them up to see if they can make the ropes up while I go and have a crab sandwich and a pint. I will spend a bit more than on an ebay shop, but I get to talk over my needs, know they are genuine, can see the quality of the whippings etc, and have a great crab sandwich.

Might be worth a detour on your way to Dartfuff one day.

PBO could do a good test on this subject. I’m sure they could rig up a chafe-o-meter to simulate a years worth of chafe in a shorter period. Easy to test claimed breaking strain vs actual too.

I'll second Barry Edwards, his ebay shop is 'Boatropes'. Good service, quality and prices.

+1

Also kind of depends on whether the OP's boat is a Leisure 17 or an Xp50 - and the rope application. Some bigger / faster boats will really benefit from top quality dyneema on halyards, furler lines, ref lines etc. On a small boat with limited stress then stretch is less of an issue.

I have bought cruising dyneema ropes for reefing lines etc from specific recognised shops on eBay. For main halyard on a 40 footer with laminate sails I would bite the bullet and replace with top notch Lyros.

Thanks everybody. There seems to be a consensus for Barry Edwards. Having checked his prices there is not much in it so he looks like the best bet. FWIW the boat is a Rival 41, so strictly cruising.
