Just watching a film called Message In a Bottle (or something like that) and he seems to do a lot of his own sailing - ? Well, who can be sure with films of course. But it made me wonder ...

Google turned up nothing.
He did Waterworld too of course.

According to IMDB "At 18, he built his own canoe and paddled his way down the rivers that Lewis & Clark followed to the Pacific", and "worked on a deep sea fishing boat" before acting.

Waterworld is one of my favourite films.

I seem to remember him helming a tattered IMOCA 60' race trimaran from a long way up the mast. Beautiful shot, and a telling reminder of what happens to one when one lets the distaff side on board.

They disfigure your clean gelcoat with crayon.....

he would want to be a pretty decent actor to carry off that capsize scene in message in a bottle - sets off in a calm and 2 minutes later he is caught in a full gale with big seas .... ah well the wooden boats had a cerian eye candy element also...
