Was up in Cambs a couple of weeks back too. Ely looked great for stinkies. Lots of stuff on the river. I was throughly impressed.
Then went up to King's Lynn, just checking out the area for possible berths if and when I move up to London, well move to Linton Cambs, working in London.
Really disappointing - they have a lovely little basin there in the centre of town (looks like it used to be a canal, but that has been seaedl off and its all silted up now) crying out for some pontoons. Tidal access likely to be a pain in arse looking at the mud that was supposed to be the river when we were there at low tide though. Be interested in hearing of anywhere else you find.
I quite like that idea, but how do they get from north Norfolk to Holland? From Felixtowe?
I've already asked finance commitee if we can live abroad (go where the sun keeps shining, and the weather suits my clothes) but she said no. But she might agree to the boat being there.
Why is it that the cheapest/interesting places to sail are miles away or abroad?
Nick,
You've spotted the flaw in my sailing plans. There isn't anywhere to sail from!! A fact not lost on my wife who thinks a river boat would be more sensible. She's right of course. But I want a yacht, stamps his foot and sulks...
Our No 1 daughter was at uni in Cambridge and now lives 8 miles from Ely. The river there (and St Ives, Huntingdon, Earith, Waterbeach and almost anywhere else in Cambridgeshire) is great for stinkie cruising. No2 daughter is at York another good base for river cruising. But I want a yacht.....
I was in Kings Lynn last Saturday and like you was very disappointed. The headlines in the local paper were about the £millions soon to be spent on tarting up the shopping centre to attract tourists. Sailing wasn't mentioned.
Wisbech has spent a lot on upgrading their harbour for leisure users. I was much impressed and the harbourmaster was very helpful when I spoke to him. There are a number of special offers to encourage you to berth there. But again Wisbech is 9-12 miles inland and restricted by tides, (get it wrong and you have to moor up at a buoy on the river or at Sutton Bridge). The river enters the Wash at the bottom right hand corner seemingly miles from anywhere - even Kings Lynn is 20-30 mls by water from Wisbech.
This is not much help I'm afraid. Maybe I should give up the whole idea of sailing and get the bike out again.
I live in Peterborough, the boat lives in Heybridge Basin. Not that expensive and only an hour and fifty mins away. It would take that long to get to north Norfolk but in Essex the saling is better.
Leave the car in the car park at Harwich. Get the HSS ferry to the Hook (3.5 hours - 25 quid each way - but you can get deals) then a train down to the boat. Bit much for a weekend but fine for the odd week. We considered doing same and leaving a car in the car park in Holland, have to watch the insurance tho'
