For cruisers, you position the boat upwind and as the boat has more wind age than the MOB, you are drifted down onto the MOB, and its safer as no props turning,

On a rib/power boat you can approach either up wind or down wind depending on the conditions,

Re: Does anyone know what a \"Williamsons Turn is?

when I did my RYA courses, was given an absolute bollocking for even considering this, and asked where I'd learnt such a dangerous technique - I responded that I'd read about it often (it's in one of the mags recently as well). Does the RYA have an opinion on this, as it appears that different instructors have different points of view, as mine insisted that into wind (tide) was the only way.

Re: Does anyone know what a \"Williamsons Turn is?

This is the way I have been asked to teach it when I did the instructor ticket, there are many different ways,
I am sorry you got a bollicking [not my style]

If it was a big sea, and had enough crew on board I would be inclined to deploy the life raft with it attached to the boat by a long rope , so the boat can be held off at a safe distance and float that down to the MOB,, with a crew member on board to get the person out of the water, then wait for the helicopter, rather than risk the boat crashing down on them. that is just my way of handling it, there will be others.

Never heard of this technique before. Like you I can't quite get my head around it. Surely this is just a posh term for "turning the boat around and heading back the way you came" or am I missing something fundamental ?

Just had a look on Boatone's link.
I was right, it is just "Turning the boat around and heading back the way you came"

Ian,
If you just 'turn the boat round' you will be some distance right or left of your original track....how far left or right will mainly depend on the radius of the turning circle.
The idea of the williamson turn is to compensate for that so that you are more likely to be retracing your exact original track.

Yes but surely all this 45 and 60 degrees and then hard over after 5 seconds is dependent on the size, type and speed of the vessel. I understand the need to get back onto your course but is it not stating the obvious to do it in this way.

Stating the obvious......

......oh Ian...how charmingly naive of you..../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif If one is of a logical turn of mind then I would agree that it should be pretty obvious....but if that is the case how do you explain the plethora of apparently stupid questions we get on here about things which switched on buddies like you and I regard as obvious.../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I suppose you could say its a concept approach to go hard over one way and then the other rather than just turn 180 degrees in either direction...getting it right on any one particular boat probably/definitely needs practice.....

regards to you too my friend.......

Re: Does anyone know what a "Williamsons Turn is?

Brendan - you are right. There are two main methods taught on RYA Powerboat courses. Drifting down with the wind and approaching into the wind or tide which ever is the stronger. Depending on sea conditions I will often do both techniques on a course. The Williamson Turn is not taught on Level 2, Intermediate or Advanced.

Why Williamson?

I guess its named after a guy who discovered this was a good way to turn around and approach person in water? but who was he and what did he do? for instance was he a lifeboatman? anyone know?

I understand your wanting to get a liferaft out but heavy seas and long ropes in the water worry me? once round the props you are all in trouble!

Re: Why Williamson?

yes, can see that, but if a fender is used on the line and it is tied high up it could work.

Re: Does anyone know what a \"Williamsons Turn is?

but the point I was making, was that on the course I went on, the drifting down onto MOB or buoy, was a definite no no. The only suitable course of action on that training course was to approach into wind or tide.

I always thought that both (three, if you take wind or tide as seperate) were perfectly valid?

Re: Does anyone know what a \"Williamsons Turn is?

I've been practicing the Williamson turn today. Boat was not availableso I practiced on my lawn tractor. Afraid I had to guess the 45deg. as a compass was not part of the features on the dash board. However I did manage to reproduce wake in the guise of cut grass. The method proved quite effective and it does seem to work although I did occasionally devour the leaf that I was using as my victim. Hope this helps.../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
