Do you use a motor cone when motor sailing?

i've not heard of this before. Does it matter what spec of plug is used? Would it be too flooded to use again?

Generally a cool plug, so prolly an 8 series (don't know the champion equiv. though I am sure some bright spark (ged it, eh eh) will jump in to tell me).

The "I'm not going forward in an F8 and 30' seas to hoist a cone" argument (or was it F3 and 2' seas?) is, of course bogus.

If we felt it was important, the lines would be run back to the cockpit like the halyards... or the kicker... or the reefing lines... or the roller furling line...

Fact is that it's not considered important by 99%+ of yachties (if it was I would see more than the sailing school boats flying them).

We have a cone, but I don't think it's ever seen daylight. I know I'm in the wrong, but I'm also in the majority ;).

Since it's been raised, we do usually hoist the anchor ball, though. The two slot-together halves could double as NUC in a pinch if hoisted separately.

(Oh, and paraffin anchor light over the cockpit )

Lots of people don't. We've seen the odd person who does. I have to admit we don't always. What does anyone else do and does it matter?

Only used when doing my YM practical. But yes it does matter. It's the law and a possible reason why your insurance might not cover you if you had a bang and the cone was a relevant fact.

Just like anchor balls matter. And again I never use them :o

Hornpipe (trad)

Do your cones hang low
Can you swing them to and fro
Can you hoist them high
Can you tie them with a bow
Do you get a smuggish feeling
When your cones you are revealing?
Yes you are a motorsailor when your cones hang low!

Or..... do your cones hang low?
Do they wobble too and fro?
Can you tie them in a knot?
Can you tie them in a bow?
Can you toss them over your shoulder?
Even you sailors who are older?
Do your cones hang low?:D:D:D
