Do You use a Marine Electrician?

Cheers. Didn't realise your patch was round here. Personally I'm very much a DIYer, so you'll not be hearing from me, but I reckon this is probably one of the best places in the country to find customers for something like this.

The site seems perfectly adequate, much like other similar businesses. What I would say about it is that it feels a little sparse - not much to it. I usually find I'm more likely to pick a company I can read a bit about, get a feel for. Of course, at this point there probably isn't any more information that you can add, but maybe once you've done a range of jobs you could put up some descriptions, with photos, as examples of your work. Ideally I'd want to see the prices you charged too, to get an idea of whether you're out of my league or excellent value, but I appreciate this might be sensitive (for you or for the customer). I'm no SEO expert, but you might also find that content like this improves your google placing as a side effect.

Hope that's constructive :-)

Darby,
If you are willing to take more advice, it is headed your way. One group that is very likely to need the services of a marine electrician is racers. They are constantly having problems with systems, and if you have (or can get) full knowledge of the most-used systems, you could be much in demand. But you will need to troubleshoot ("My apparent wind readings seem OK, and the boat speed works, but they don't seem to be able to work together to come up with true wind speed, angle and direction. Can you fix it?")
Find out when nearby regattas will be held, and contact the organisers well in advance. They may put out an information pack for competitors, with names of chandelries and service providers for those who are visiting. Get your name on that list, or walk the docks handing out cards before / during the regatta. If no-one is aboard, leave your card wedged into the hatchboards.
If you do good work, are on time and charge a fair price, you may have to turn people away. Be prepared to work VERY long hours during the high season, especially weekends.
Good luck.

DIY myself but like a previous poster I sometimes struggle to get good quality components and connectors etc. so someone to supply us DIYers would get my order.

Ahem, The Institution of Engineering and Technology now (why I don't know, I preferred it before...)

I am a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The IEEE happens to have a section concerned with Geoscience and Remote Sensing, which is what I do. It doesn't mean I am competent to work with domestic or 12V electrical circuits, despite being entitled to "Professional Engineer" status the other side of the pond! In fact, A-level Physics is more use - but it doesn't tell you anything about the conventions and practicalities of actual wiring. I can readily understand a circuit diagram, but that's a long way from being able to work out the way my boat is wired.

As far as I'm concerned, you should always use the right tools for the job. In many cases, the right tool is a competent professional! I am prepared to have a look at a job, and if I am sure I understand what is going on, then I will undertake it. But if I don't - and that's a lot of the time - then I am not, and will pay someone who knows what they are doing.

I'm a DIY'er too... not really because I want to save the money, more because I believe its really important that you understand your own boats systems... you never know when you'll need to fix them or under what conditions...

Saying that, I remain constantly surprised by the number of people who pay someone to do anything elctrical or electronic related...

IMHO, the secret to any marine engineering business is the quality of the service... do things when you say you will, communicate with the customer effectively, charge enough to earn a good living, but don't be greedy, and you'll very quickly build an excellent reputation up, and not suffer from a lack of business... I wish you the best of luck, and hope it goes very well for you.
