Do you think that this is good Police PR?

What makes you think that the police are interested in PR? Or what we think of them?

Fair point! I suspect that they only have an interest in PR to back up their continual moaning about lack of resources.

Non licence ...

When I was cadet in Merchant Navy - wrote away for new licence in the days of 'repeat' Provisionals .... was riding the bike in Littlehampton ... got stopped.
"Where's licence lad ?"
"Applied for .... should get it next few days ..."
"OK which station you nominate to produce it at ?"
"Crawley New Town ...."

So off we go - no problem.

5 days later no licence in post and I think - right better go to W.Sussex Licence centre .... I telephone and explain that today I have to produce at Police Station etc. They say - "OK no problem can you come in and we'll sort it. Oh by the way - you forgot to answer one question on the form .... Are you disqualified from holding or obtaining a licence ...."
"I politely ask - sorry but can I still have my licence today with the date as applied ...."
"Yes of course - if you come in now - we'll sort it out ....."

Off I trundle to W.S Licence centre .... see the girl at the counter, she remembers telephone call ... 5 minutes later new licence in my hand. I with smile on face open it to check ..... SHOCK - HORROR - CHANGE PANTS !!!! The date of commencement of licence is TODAY !! not as agreed as applied. I speak to her about it - answer is Supervisor interefered and refused to allow back-dating of licence .... even though form was received / dated etyc. previous.

So of to cop-shop and let em know there's a problem ...

"Excuse me - but I have this copy of the application showing I applied before being stopped, West Sussex Licencing didn't give me a licence till today ... ??"

Desk Cop checks the paper I have .... flips open his book etc.

"OK lad - now I must caution you and say ... anything you say etc. etc."

The sod 'booked me' without even any discussion or questions at all.

Went to court and fined a tenner and endorsed. OK so I forgot to answer one question ... but I still feel it was a bit unfair .... its not as if I was actually cheating to not apply for a licence !!

Re: Non licence ...

I had the satisfaction of going into a Police station last year.......

Me. "I would like to make a complaint"

Bored looking Sargeant on the Desk "Yes Sir. What about?"

Me. "About a Policeman"............

Long story, but I got a formal apology.

Police incompetance?

Well ... if your after a stupid police story ....

A couple of years ago I was leaving the house to go down to the sailing club .... up turned this police car - so I stopped and thought - what do they want? Oh well - better find out ...
"Can we do this inside please sir" ... hmm ... whats this about ...??
"Can you tell us where you were on the **th at 15:14 ?"
"At work ... where I usually am..."
........
"We have your car on CCTV footage in town"
"Hmm .. are you sure?" .. wife reminds me that I went to pick up some flight tickets cos I was off to Finland on business ...
"Ah ... yes ... oops ... I parked in a loading bay for 2 minutes whilst I picked up the tickets" Surely they are not going to do me for that?
"Did you go anywhere else?"
"No - why?"
"A forged credit card was used to purchase goods in the Vodafone store"
I think it helped when I forgot which road the shop was in ... then they asked about a tan breifcase ... no chance - mines black ... then they showed me the in-store CCTV pictures ...
Bloke in a TAN SUIT with a watch on his left wrist and a TAN briefcase ....
I don't wear a suit to work, I'm left handed so wear my watch on my right wrist and have a black breifcase - oh - and I don't wear a jacket... and what would I be doing parking a LOUD MGB Roadster - with roof down in a prominet position ...
One quick look at the CCTV pictures that captured my car or a phonecall to the travel agent I went into would've told them that .... and saved 2 policemen 1/2hr of their time...

Detective Skills - 0 !!

Re: CPS incompetance?

Slightly differant, last year two shops were burned down in town. Damage was around £750,000 plus clean up, and a womwn in the flat above just escaped.
Three 15 year old youths were arrested, it appears the police had CCTV footage, witnesses, and confessions.
Case went to the CPS and they decided not to proceed.

Why, the CPS said - they had to be able to prove that those responsible for the damage had been aware of the risks that were present. If not there was no case to answer.

It appears that they are claiming they could not prove that these 15 year olds did not realise that setting fire to a building would cause damage or danger.

We have to wait and see what happens to the youths arrested for droping half a building block from a road bridge into the cab of a train, driver badly injured, where they aware of the risk??
