Do you drink the water from your tank?

I've only read the first 20 posts here, but I'm curious about water safety more than taste - doesn't drinking tanked water, refilled from wherever you berth, bring aboard the risk of ghastly bugs like Legionnaires'? I'm glad if I'm wrong.

Legionella isn't really an issue in the UK, as it is dormant below 20C.

Thanks JD. Ironic, isn't it...here we all are, hoping so much for the temperature to exceed 20°.

If the sea temperature ever gets to 20° here, even the nutters in The Lounge might grudging start to concede that global warming is happening, though they'll still manage to blame the EU, gays and muslims, and probably gay muslims from the EU.

Also I think the initial problems, at least, with Legionnaires was by breathing it from shower (or cooling tower) aerosols rather than drinking. Not many people boil their shower water, though!

Been away 3 years.... round the world.... we only have fairly limited tankage so yes, we drink the water from them, very very occasionally bung a bit of bleach/milton in.... water purification tablets when available. We also buy bottled water in 1 1/2 litre bottles which fit very nicely in our bilges for pure drinking water.
We got the trots in Galapagos, but dunno whether it was our water or the dodgy cafes.

Just had a good look in our 3 tanks, as getting ready for summer cruise. We have big waterproof hatches in each, so can get inside the aluminium tanks. All spotless, water clear as a bell after a winter afloat in Devon. No sign of anything nasty except a little pile of calcium carbonate grit in each one! Impossible to remove as when I touched it it seemed to float around.....so have emptied tanks and refilled with fresh. Our main concern is the possible dissolved aluminium. Don't want to go potty any sooner than we have to! Much prefer our tanks to previous boats with sealed plastic ones which were impossible to see inside. Maybe you all have spotless tanks too, shame boatbuilders don't make them all easy to check.

If you're running short, dilute it.

I don't drink the tank water on my Hurley 22 for a few reasons:
- I've never cleaned it out, so it's probably a bit manky in there
- I don't even use the thing for washing up as the bowl is tiny and the tap's in the way of the cooker so I removed it
- Even if it was fully working I probably wouldn't bother as it's just a day/weekend boat and bottled water is easier than going in search of a pontoon with drinking water

I've happily drunk the tank water on larger boats though where it made sense to have all the associated faff of a tank, sink, tap, shower, jacuzzi... whatever ;)
