Do you can it or buy from the expensive pump

Because you seem blissfuly unaware of the issues around red diesel and its use in a boat. You are on a boating forum, your location is the UK, but I guess you could have a petrol powered boat, or use so little that you fill with white from the garage. Just curious why you wouldn't know that red diesel is still legally used in UK boats.

So why can't you use it in your car

I think that people on here are not clear that there are many many engines in the UK that can legally use red diesel including Marine ones. Morrisons are providing for these not just for boats For example

1 Most construction site machines
2 Most Farm machines
3 Commercial Fishing Boats I think
4 Pleasure craft subject to certain conditions regarding what it is used for on the boat
5 Many Stationary engines
These are just some that spring to mind

Is it me or is this thread really confusing?
Is Bigplumps saying his Morrisons sells RED DIESEL direct to the public at the tax free (or what I believe is something like a 5% tax) and without any checks to what you are using it for ?

When I buy red diesel (for boat !) at MDL marina I have to sign what I am using it for in line with 60/40 split. This receipt has my name and address for possible audit.

Are others really saying you cant use red diesel in a (pleasure) boat !?

I am well aware of petrol boats and jetskis being taken to Tescos etc for petrol as this can be cheaper than marina but red diesel! This is perfectly legal and allowed.

I would be very wary of buying red diesel for personal boat use from anywhere but a marina or official supplier if you weren't a farmer or had a legimate business to do so, and especially on a frequent basis for attracting attention from being a statistic/receipt outlier. Even more so if you have to give your name and address !
Last thing I would want is some land-based fuel related supermarket smartarse following up unusual purchases and reporting them to higher bodies for investigation ! I was impressed with the method to justify the 60/40 split though

Or maybe I am just easily confused

Morisons sell it to many many people with no checks at all so yes direct to the public. Why would they need to check any more than with petrol. It can be legally used all over the place in all sorts of things. We are building (doing it our selves not paying others) a large extension on a family house at the moment and purchased the red diesel for the dumper and digger. This is quite legal and proper so to do.

Of course you can use red diesel in a pleasure boat it is just about what tax you pay. Water side marinas are geared up for this because they have to be. As I said the proof of what you have paid tax on or indeed how much you have used and in what is not at all easy to prove or be checked once tanks are coloured. Have you or anyone else ever shown receipts to anyone official in the UK.

Regarding buying from a marina if there aint one that sells fuel anywhere near you what are you supposed to do. This is the case for many people away from the main UK boating areas. Those that boat in and around the Hamble need sometimes to pull their head out of a certain place and smell the coffee as indeed do those that live and work in London in other regards. For information people do live, Boat and work elsewhere.

Don't listen to anyone outside of the UK about this as they don't have a scoubies and it was that lot with the blue flag with yellow stars that caused the issue in the first place.

Never however put red in a car or lorry. This was the main reason the dye was put in red in the first place

Why do your credentials say Fareham, Hampshire then. I know us carrot crunching country boys don't know much and struggle to read by our candle light but that aint in France I was told by a clever Londoner

It is physically attached , just about.

Do you not have marked diesel in France ?

I think the diesel you put in your cars in France is white as it is in the UK.
In France the diesel you put in your boats is white.
In the UK the diesel we put in our boats is marked red.

I cant believe all those militant French Farmers who block the ports from time to time use full tax diesel
