Do the pirates still exist?

which pirates?
Pirate Radio - yes, but not Caroline
Pittsburgh Pirates - yes but struggling
Somali pirates - yes but not as successfully

so "yes"

Ours are going to Dorset (again). Had three great pirate meet ups, one with Laurin and their delightful mini pirates, it seems to have died after Morgana, or PoH as he is now, stopped organising it - he was brilliant.

Well if you want to be serious for a moment---a manager at a client of mine left Shotley in choppy weather in his 28 ft fly bridge motor boat. He was on the fly deck & wife & kids below. He said it was a bit rough but he had to get to the Crouch due to work commitments
Just off Walton 2 jet skis ( blokes dressed in black) came alongside & shouted to him to stop. He refused & tried to go faster but due to chop could not go very fast. Wife screaming, kids crying. One jetski tried to come alongside & the bloke almost got aboard. I am told the bloke was very determined & was close to suceeding

They gave up & he headed towards the Swin. However, at the Swin spitway they had another go but being flatter he went faster & could veer about. & the wash pushed them away.
His radio was below & he did not even think about calling coastguard.
When back in Fambridge he rang plod & they said if it happened again let them know !!!!

He told me as I sail that area a lot & he thought a yacht an easy target. He was shocked at the police response. Being relatively new to boating he did not really know what to do & was clearly shaken up

So pirates on the east coast do exist

Call me a sceptic, but..................

Sounds more septic to me, the type produced by bulls.

I've been buzzed by jetskis and I can imagine those new to boating finding that upsetting, but that story...

The bloke was a senior director of a £120m turnover company & not given to telling those sort of porkies. When he called me into the office as soon as he arrived on the following monday morning he was clearly shaken by it all.
It was not the sort of " once upon a time" story one sometimes gets

I like that he should be believed because he runs a big company, because if the banking crisis has taught us anything it's that directors of big companies always tell the whole truth.

But the issue isn't the veracity of his recollection, it's the reliability of his perception.

Well if you want to be serious for a moment---

I'm trying, but it's hard.

a manager at a client of mine left Shotley in choppy weather in his 28 ft fly bridge motor boat.

That's a typo, right ? You meant 48 ft ?

Just off Walton 2 jet skis ( blokes dressed in black)

Erm, yes.... that'll be the wet suits that jet skiers wear.

came alongside & shouted to him to stop. He refused & tried to go faster but due to chop could not go very fast. Wife screaming, kids crying. One jetski tried to come alongside & the bloke almost got aboard. I am told the bloke was very determined & was close to suceeding

So, the flybridge cruiser, under threat of being boarded by "pirates" cannot go fast due to the chop but a bloke on a jet ski is almost able to board him, on the move.

I'm sure we all know what it's like to board a stationary yacht from a dinghy, in a tiny swell/chop.

His radio was below & he did not even think about calling coastguard.

Of course not, who would ?

When back in Fambridge he rang plod & they said if it happened again let them know !!!!

Wow ! They sound sceptical :)
