do sailors have better skills than motorboaters

Is it just me or do a small minority of sailors feel that they have a God given right to own british waters. Even my friends who occasionally come out with me have the impression that yotties feel superior to motorboat drivers.

Why can't people just accept that sometimes people make mistakes, including sailors,

It appears by some of the comments we are the low of the low and that motorboat production should stop forthwith

I just get so peeved with some of their superior attitude when they are most definitely not.

I'm not sure that it is appropriate to generalise. There are some real idiots in mobo's. Take a look at Solitaires recent post.

Hmm , I'm not so sure about that, I've spoken with the targa 37 owner and have his side shall we say.
As they say everything happens for a reason.

I haven't generalised have I? I have said a small minority. You make my point Rafiki, that some people are not good, both Moboers and sailors

I think it fair to say that experienced raggies might have a better understanding of the nitty gritty of being on the water, and especially wind and tides, but also the poor effect ignorant Motorboaters' have on them, flubbing along at 4-5 knots, too often to windward.

After all mostly motorboats will be going from A to B in a straight line and with no real effort, whereas a raggie may have to fight his damnedest for every metre when tacking, especially when the tide as well as wind is unfavourable.

But I think it does both raggies and motorboaters good to experience at first hand the others discipline. So perhaps more open invites for each to join the other. After all we are all water users, just sometimes we want to be on the same bit at the same time, and that just doesn't work too well !

Yes by necessity as a generalisation but often fail to understand or sympathise from a Mobos perspective in my experience. Courtesy cuts both ways imo.

Not really to do with skills as such, but usually the bad behaviour of MOBOs is borne out of ignorance of the effect their wash in particular has on sailing boats.

Good example at the weekend. I was sorting out my fenders etc outside the marina, so walking round the deck. a MOBO came within 20m or so, totally unnecessarily as there was nobody else around and plenty of space to keep clear.

Don't rise to it Lionel, there are always going to be exceptions that prove the rule, the rule being in this case that most people who boat realise that it's good for the soul and they have a great deal of respect for the like minded.
We are currently tied up in A Caruna amongst 50 or so sailing boats, (we are the only 2 motor boats here), and the pontoon has a super friendly vibe, people stopping to talk to us, telling us about their journey and answering our questions about the good ports and anchorages that we hope to find.

I do struggle sometimes to reconise some of the angst that's expressed in these threads - I guess that to some there is a 'them and us' me? I just think that there's an 'us'...hey ho :)

It's sometimes difficult but your point is well taken. Unfortunately we (moboers) often get tarred with the same brush

If you feel like this as a Moboer try owning a jetski and see what people think. It seems to me that some people have to have someone to dislike

Bravo and well said... this topic comes up again and again on the forums as if your choice of craft somehow affects your personality...

I take the view there are moboists who are sometimes knobs, and sailing types who are sometimes knobs... just as there are knobs in all walks of life... the trick is steering clear of the knobs (no pun intended)... :D

Ha ha - well said. I have great friends with mobbo's, sailing boats and (bless them) narrow boats and we all have 'the water' in common and there are a few knobs amongst all the fraternities. Frankly I don't care what type of boat someone has as we all share the common interest of the water. However - don't get me started on the predominantly ignorant 'rowers', this is where my tolerance ends. Can be at bl**dy anchor and still be berated for causing excessive wash or hogging the channel with language too rude to even feature on a building site (or whatever a politically correct reference would be....).

On the whole moboers are considerate. But there is the occasional one that gives your sport a bad name.

Just as most of the rag 'n' stick brigade are pleasant, but then you find the odd one who isn't.

Much as Fantasie said in #13

Absolutley! We sail as well when we get the chance and being on the water is what it is all about. I don't like to generalise about any particular group of people but having cruised the none tidal Thames two or three years back I am sorely tempted to agree with your point about rowers....... :)

They are also better looking, amazingly intelligent and fantastic lovers I find, not to mention tolerant, patient, humble and modest :o:o:o
