Do phono sockets have 2 wires if you chop them off?

Re your saying that you didn't ask about speakers - Your first post said I've just bought some phono plugs to fit to the ends of the speaker wires for the new JVC car stereo/DVD system. From that and subsequent posts it seemed that you are talking about the cabling and connections needed to get from the stereo/DVD system to your speakers, in particular the connectors at the system end?????

Your points:

1) In my experience (and in most installations they are cabled this way), the cable from the unit to your speakers (that is the KEF Eggs) does not need to be shielded. Just 2 cores - if at the Stereo/DVD unit you have a shielded cable as you say then the screen is just one conductor so just join it to one of the pairs in the cable you use to go to the speakers. That is, if indeed the shielded cable you refer to is actually a speaker cable. But note, most of the other cables do need to be shielded.

2 Figure 8 auto cable, flat auto twin lead, etc, as has many names, is just the flat two pair cable from an auto or other shop (when you cut through it and look at the end it looks like a figure 8.

3. Woofy is Dog_Watch.

Judging from the nature of your questions I strongly suggest that you get someone to install the unit for you. Could be an expensive mistake in the offering otherwise /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. I think Dog_Watch has offered.

You've bought a very nice stereo set up and want to ruin it by putting crimp/choccy box connectors in the signal path?

Solder and heat shrink/slef-amalg is your friend.

PS do car stereos have a balanced output? or shielded un-balanced?

PPS KEF eggs are stereo speakers are they not, and therefore a different impedance to your run of the mill car speakers. Will your amp handle the mismatch?

Shielded unbalanced usually for any line level input or output. unshielded unbalanced for speaker connections (usually).

I doubt very much that car stereos would have balanced line level audio inputs or outputs, they may however be floating (audio terminology not in the nautical sense). Balanced audio connections need 3 wires, Live, return and screen and a 3 pole connector, usually jack or XLR, occasionaly screw terminal.

Hifi speakers are usually 8Ohm impedance car speakers often 4 Ohms impedance. IMHO should work ok but may not get as high a volume but probably won't be noticable.

Thanks for that.. I think things got a bit mixed up... I thought it was a specific make/type of speaker that was being referred to, rather than the generic ones I mentioned.

I'm sorted now, or at least to the point where I'm connected to 2 fronts and 2 rears, can play DVDs, CDs, radio, and get the DVD picture to the TV.

Got the yard to solder the phono plugs onto a short length of speaker cable.... now I can use them at my leisure.

In the end it seems that the phono connectors are for sending the speaker signals to another amp, although I cant seem to find a centre speaker output, other than the phono, which doesnt send sound to the speaker.

Anyway... I'm sure I'll find out how to feed the centre speaker.

Thanks to everyone... even amongst the confusion, all the comments helped me to get the job done.

Cheers

Richard
