Do people understand almanacs anymore?

Have to say that when I did have a VHF, over about 8 years I must have used it less than 10 times. Not only that with the two handhelds I owned the battery went flat and dead (not rechargeable again) before I even got to use them in earnest.

In current circumstances it doesn't even make it on the priority list of things to buy.

I used to be in Hasler and one of the things that used to annoy me most were boats exiting the harbour not sticking to the right so if you are incoming and you move to the right to pass port to port you out way out of the small boats channel. That however was four years ago, at the beginning of May I cam back for a weekend and `I saw a boat go right up the middle of the main channel, itq was a sailing boat about 37ft.

I got Old Moore's Almanac this year - doesn't mention anything about Portsmouth SBC :)

Seriously - as far as I am aware there is no defined width of the channel through the harbour itself, and even though technically is says one should not overtake it is not realistic to have 20 boats queue up behind on boat that is just making 0.1 knots SOG

Agreed...the SBC can be a right clusterf@@k. Usually caused by...

-Sports fishing boats who don't understand you drive on the right
-Impatient people who decide to overtake at the narrowest bit
-People who think you are about to ram them because you've pointed at them and are giving it the beans...where in fact you are trying to avoid beng swept into the middle of the channel and will be absolutely nowhere near them when you pass
-People who haven't done the above bit of pre-emptive steering and suddenly end up in the middle of the channel...leaving you in the quandary of passing port to port or getting in the way of a ferry
-Very good sailors who are immune from wind shadow who clearly can sail this bit...erm...
-People who decide to take the inner swash without looking or signalling
-The editor/proof reader of the Shell Pilot who wants incoming traffic to leave BC outer to Stbd inbound from the Inner Swash
-Car alarms going off on the ferries
-Sunsail (obviously)

Still, all adds to the fun!
