I have a Volvo 2000 series diesel which does not specify an air cleaner element. It only says clean it at certain intervals.

Having spent a fair bit of dosh on trying to keep the noise down, there is quite a clatter from the valve gear.

Is it ok to try and find an element that will fit ?

Does your engine specify an element ?

Many Thanks

Air cleaners will restrict the air flow to some degree, and might upset the carburation marginally: = more black smoke.

If you have induction noise problems, try putting a metre or so of hose pipe on the air intake. This is commonly found on diesel cars, and is surprisingly effective. Perhaps the cheapest way to experiement is to visit your local car breaker.

Make sure the internal diameter is at least that of the air intake port.

On my old boat which had a VP 2000 engine it was fitted with a proper 'car style' air filter, which was the standard. My new boat as a VP 2030 engine which as just a soft foam sleeve over the intake. Looks abit like a the form cover you see on a microphone.

Carburetter on a diesel Motor?

An air filter helps keep the intake noise down and acts as a sound baffle. You you never know, it may prevent something undesirable being sucked into the motor. Probably will never need changing.

Never found one yet!!!!

Mine hasn't got one, and the handful or so other boats I have had a chance to 'check out' didn't have an air filter element either.

I think I am only refering to Volvo motors, with a filter box similar to that on an old Mini or Morris Minor.

It begs a question, has anyone got one fitted?

P.S. Each time I have had my oil analysed, Silicon has shown up, indicating dust ingress, but not at a level that caused the lab any concern.

Just wondered if one was specified. Everyone I have spoken to about a service kit has failed to mention an air filter element.

My Perkins Perama M20(same base engine as VP 2020) just has a very coarse mesh over the induction manifold - have also thought about fitting a better air filter and at the LBS this year looked at the VP and saw all thay had was the foam filter as described previously. I would prefer a proper filter as on a car, this job is on projects for this winter. I would have to fit some kind of adaptor to fit a car type pancake air cleaner.
