Do I really weigh that much

Looked at my boats builder certificate last night and it shows the estimated tonnage as 13.5 !

I thought it only displaced around 6.5 tonnes, anyone know why there might be a difference

Think thats to do with the maximum safe load weight

I guess it refers to the 'measured tonnage' which has to be used for registration purposes and is based on arcane formulae involving overall dimensions of the boat. It is usually more than the actual weight of the boat

isn't it something like the amount of damp hay that could be stuffed into the hull?

used to rate the old Thames Barges?

I thought it was something to do with the number of barrels of run that could fit into the free space plust the weight of the structure.....??????
