Re: There is a difference.

Don't get soft! They are food animals! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Serve with traditional Scandinavian red berry sauce like they do with Reindeer and you won't want to eat beef again.

and the antlers look great over the fireplace mid winter, and are a great talking point

Besides, they are stupid great buggers that wander in front of cars and trains at great expense to the insurance companies!

Re: no, not really

well, i hhave got two navtex thingies and don't think i have ever used them. Thety splurged all the paper very quickly, so i restricted the area, so then they started giving forecasts for stuff yonks ago. Or mebbe the paper was run out and i looked at it two days later. Anyway, imho they are mostly a saily thing where you stay at sea for days or weeks i think, whereas in a powerboat range is sortof 12 hours tops and then you are at the shore with nice marinas and other assiantance is available for you to consult. Think about it - if you did have navtex you wd still go and have a look at other forecasts anyway wooncha? I wd. I once asked someone in a superyacht who said he rang us NASA from south of france for the forecasts and it only cost 50 quid or summink, gulp.

It would be far more use to have decent charts, and a generator and erm even a toaster (ok, i admit i have got one!) BUT i have not got an ipod so that's ok. Tho i do have a dinghy so not quite so ok.

From floyd's response, one has to conclude that the users of this forum only ever go on day trips, from marinas and have no interest in navigation and hazard warnings. However, if you are not one of these and possibly anchor overnight, go foreign or just wish to have as much data as possible pertaining to your voyaging, then I would highly recommend a Navtex receiver. For the rest of you, having one would still save that walk to the marina office for the forecast and might surprise you with some notice of danger in you cruising area which up to now you have risked not knowing about.

Navtex is an excellent service and its FREE! (once you have that receiver of course).

Nik, if you have a lap top get the Nav tex engine aerial receiver.
Its easier to use, easier to save messages and you can play space invaders whilst waiting for a message that tells you its windy :)
