Do I really need Navtex?

In my quest for a new VHF unit I have come across the Silva DSC + Navtex set. Whilst this is a similar price to say the Simrad RD68 I am as ever a little cofused as to the benefits.

Is Navtex worth it for someone like me who has spent a year bobbing about the Solent and am I making a compromise by buying the Silva?

Thanks

Nick

Nick - get a standard VHF/DSC set. The Simrad unit is good and Raymarine are bringing out some new bits of kit shortly. Navtex is great, but to be honest you won't use it. Wait, we are all together in a couple of weeks time! Oh, the current VHF is working OK? Other wise we best have a chat B4 we go!! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Nick,

Saw this post and your earlier one about selection of nav equipment.

IMO navtex is not that useful given that Navtex printouts are often on display at marina/harbour offices, and weather/hazard forecast info is available from so many sources (Radio Solent, CG, Internet, marine call, etc.)

Re. the question about selection of electronics, personally I thought the decision points on nav equipment were

* User interface (I think the Raymarine gear has a nice UI)
* Screen brightness and clarity. I thought the screens on the Raymarine units looked better (sharper definition, brighter colours, and more consistent colouring and contrast) that those of Simrad and Furuno.

So we ended up with all Raymarine gear, including the VHF as I particularly liked the "telephone" style as opposed to fixed set with fist mike. It was a bit of an extravagance I suppose given that equally capable VHF/DSCs are available for less money. It was just that assessed independently I felt that in isolation, each item of Raymarine kit was the best.

Definitily agree with one of your replies that to buy cheap is to buy twice. Find what you feel most comfortable with and go with that. Anything else is false economy.

I am tending to agree and whilst me being me I am keen to explore cheaper options I usually end up spending more money and buying something better (often waiting a bit longer whilst I save up). The replacement nav gear seems to be no exception ie the price of cheaper stuff is certainly attractive but they just don't seem to excite me as a real buying proposition.

....I guess that is why I am always skint...

BTW where abouts in Hythe are you moored - we are in "C" basin?

Re: There is a difference.

Well in that case I challenge you and your herd to a moose fight in the nearest moose ring. I'll bring my trusty sabre and a blunderbus.

Then tell me you're not concerned!

There'll be a great bbq that nite!!

Re: There is a difference.

Far too easy! Could we build a huge clay shooting contraption capable of launching Mooses. The Onager was capable of launching 75kg, so we'd have to scale it up a bit!

I'm going to have to find that moving Gif I did of the walking Moose footsteps disappearing in a trail of bloody footprints, then the final killing shot /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

You know how it is - t'is a sign of secret affection. When you care about someone and you are not able to bring yourself to give them a hug, you chop them up instead /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

Now that there are two of them to go around, maybe we could have a "Hug a Moose Week"?
