It may depend on the size. I have Andersen 12STs and I don't think they have springs. The parts list shows a "composite top", not a spring. Could just mean that mine have lost their bounce, though.
 
The ones I’m interested in are 18ST’s and they don’t have the black cap. I’ve asked the seller if the jaws are sprung but haven’t heard back.
 
No. Spring loaded jaws like the ones on current Lewmar and Harken ones to grip various diameter lines. I’m asking as on the Andersen website, under ‘winch features’, spring loaded jaws are not mentioned, whereas the aforementioned winch manufacturers websites make a big point of it.
