Do all engines have a hint of blue smoke ?

I have a commercial fishing vessel that has a Gardner main and a Kubota auxillary.
A few years ago when I used to spend hours some days with the main idling out of gear while winching drop lines, I would notice on the long steam home a trail of exhaust smoke about half a mile long. Oil consumption increased too. There is a product advertised here called FTC Decarboniser. I bought a bottle and used it as per the instructions. The results were almost imediate, with in about 3 days of use the smoke had disappeared completely and oil consumption dropped by half. I still use it occassionally but at a weaker mix as a fuel cleaner/conditioner. My main engine is over 50 years old and is still all original, some blue smoke at start up and while the engine is cold. Very hard to see anything when up to temperature and cruising. With the kubota I never run it with out load and will run mercury vapour lights etc even during the day to give it some load.

Strangely yes

At work , exel logistics, 300 + waggons, in the garage, (new term VMU,) is a fitter who use to work for the council....

The standard Method to stop the street cleaner from smoking, due to bore glaze, (caused by low running temp due to excess time at idle etc) was to vim it, then change the engine oil.

This was after umpteen strip & hone the bores etc. Aparantely it was done quite regularly and as far as he is concerned still done......

But wouldnt have the nerve to do so my self.

stop fussing with it and stick some Soltron in the fuel.

For those who wil moan at this, I have a simple fact. Soltron allows the fuel to burn at a lower air:fuel ratio therefoe allowing a cleaner burn of the fuel hence reduced smoke.

All the best.

Ok.....enough....diesels smoke....Jeremy Clarkson told us all a few years ago "Get a diesel, and ride around in a cloud of smoke" and I don't think he was talking about his fags <grin>.

Vim, Brasso or Bradex ?

One post elsewhere condemns use of Easy Start ...... another post gives out Vim to throw down air intakes ....

Blimey - I;m glad I a have an old Bus Engine from the 50's .... can take this abuse !! Wouldn't fancy it on a little pEtter or light Yanmar !!!!

IMHO of course !!
