DJY Mavic Air: any good?

Looking at the care package for the Mavic Air, it's cheap and covers water damage... I'm wondering if you need to recover it from the depths to make a claim?

No - they will cover if you provide them with them with the flight record and it’s a reasonable claim - they will talk you through that process. It’s also best to keep the onboard video (phone) up to date. That way you’ll get at least some hd (720) evidence/keepsake/you’ve been framed footage....

It’s worth the 100 bucks

No Drone, No claim. DJi are not forthcoming with payouts according to the general forum experience :ambivalence:

Self insure. Use very very carefully and you'll be fine....

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how much other people look at the footage they make with any sort of camera platform. I tend to look at stuff once and then it gets forgotten about. No idea whether that's typical or not.

The Karma has been discontinued for a reason, unreliable, keeps crashing and flying away
Allright, you persuaded me, I'll look for some other ways to waste a grand during my trip.
Renting a Camaro convertible instead of a plain vanilla car springs to mind...

that's probably money better spent P.

I didn't buy the care package.

I was getting IMU errors which seemed to go away if I got the drone to take off from the bathing platform.
All was good until I got cocky and decided to sit in a captains chair in the cockpit waiting for the drone to appear above the back seats.
On take off, it hit one of our tenders chocks and ricochet'd into the water.
SWMBO rescued it within about 2 seconds before it sank.

If I had one of their care packages, do you think DJI would have replaced it?

With a £79 charge they would have Hurricane - although the second drone that we sent back, Phantom 3, was sent off and they just sent a new one foc, said that they thought it was a bird strike but we’re happy to replace rather than repair.

It’s like the iPhone oem replacement programme really, you’re paying aggregate cost for the replacement and DJI keep a customer....

Pretty decent comparison here
https://www.drone-world.com/dji-mavic-pro-vs-gopro-karma
DJI are so established now - their customer support is wonderful. They’ve replaced 2 drones for me, (one fly away, one bird strike) and the continuous software updates make for some great treats as the OS develops.

Back to the Mavic Pro, the importance of the UHF range shouldn’t be ignored and the extra 6 or 7 minutes of battery life will mean far less return to homes, (something that is truely wonderful on the Pro unless you are on a boat!).

I primarily bought my Mavic Pro for our daughter's wedding.
It captured the day really well.
My son flew it - father of the bride was otherwise occupied.
I had 3 batteries and my son used the lot - keeping it flying whilst the professional photographer was setting up the group shots.
It became a "kind of" flying tripod.
So I wasn't that disappointed in loosing it to the sea after it had recorded a very special day.

And during our summer cruise, it did manage to capture a few days before going for that fateful swim.

Sounds like I need to buy one of their care packages next time.

No good if it goes for an indefinite swim; DJi Care needs you to return the drone for repair/ replacement. Better to sort separate comprehensive insurance out (I have it for my Spark so am always slightly apprehensive over water-didn’t realise the limitation when I got it)

The Air certainly looks interesting but the small range wouldn’t work for me. I’d also expect It to be less stable in the wind.

As a drone, the pro is a pretty nice package. That said, mine has developed the ‘disconnected’ fault and needs to be sent to DJI. I’ve tried everything, and I mean everything, but the rc will not connect to a mobile device. This problem has been widely documented on the internet with no proper fix... there was a software update that solved the issue for some, but not all it seems. Still, imho, pro is the one to get at the mo.

P
It’s Wifi only which is going to be the main problem, I’ve had ‘fly aways’ on the earlier Phantoms but never lost the connection of the radio controlled Mavic Pro.

(It’ll be far easier for Portifino to down with his spy gear;) ).

It’s smaller of course so that’s a plus but the battery life is 25% down on the Mavic Pro.

Picture quality looks comparable to the Mavic Pro, but nowhere near the Phantom Pro.

I’d pay the extra $$ and get the Mavic Pro, make sure to pay for the after care, whichever one you buy.

It is not WiFi Only same as the Spark. Always get the controller. Look at the Fly more package

In theory it's superior to the Mavic Pro; same size sensor for pics, but has a greater bandwidth for video so there will be less compression when filming. It also supports 1080p/120fps and I think 2.7k/60fps, so more flexibility when you're filming.

Yep, I’ve had a good re read of side by side specs and were I coming into the store for the first time, I’d go for the Air.
It does have range limitations but that would not be an issue to me or most others and it has better sensors which is a plus.

It doesn’t shoot in 24fps at 4K tho’ which is a shame as that’s a lovely setting for late afternoon smooth dolly shots but on balance I’ve changed my mind!

If/when I kill my Mavic Pro, id give it some serious thought...

Lovely shots and good to see some proper twin hull boats ;)
