DIY Rigging.

Did our Bowman 40 ourselves down on the Guardiana a few years ago. Staylok fittings and wire straight from the manufacturer-no dealer in Portugal then-at a great discount.
Tied up to the village dock and did the stays one at a time, without lowering the mast. No major problems, be careful not to gall the wire when you turn up the fittings.A little drop of blue loktite on the threads stops that issue. Don't over tighten them either.
Crossed the Atlantic twice since and sailed many thousands of miles with no rigging issues!

I could not agree more, but would the insurance mob agree?
Not being done by a recognised rigger may result in a no claim.
You do have a point!

The operative phrase being "properly fitted"
I just remembered the case of a Bavaria 38 where the mast came down during a race.I was at the club at the time and helped get the mast out of the water .When I inspected the broken forestay I discovered that the lower Stalok terminal had been assembled without loctite and had unscrewed itself. The owner didn't report this bit of information to the insurers and got a new rig but he was lucky that in Portugal the surveyers employed by the insurance companies don't really know what they're doing.
