Coming into my berth s/handed I've found a mooring pole useful. They're those aluminium tubes with a rowlock in the top and a springy mount on the bottom and they hold the stern or bow line so that you can grab it without jumping ashore. Works a treat for me.

Thought I'd buy a new one for my new berth (last one got nicked)

£56!!!!! at Force 4. Some kind of joke, surely?

I've got a drawer full of rowlocks, and plenty of plastic tube, so I'm making my own.

What would you use for the bottom end that attaches to the pontoon?

Depending on the diameter of the pole you are using I'd bore a hole of suitable diameter in the side of a 300mm length of. 100mm x 50mm joist, screw it to the dock and stick the pole in it. You can get flat blade drills of all sizes for a few quid. Not pretty but less attractive to tea leaves.

I have a very effective one made from a broom handle with hooks on the top fashioned from a old wire coat-hanger. I even varnished it. No springy thing at the bottom, but nevertheless it works a treat. Must have cost all of two quid!

I have permanent lines made up with loops laid on the pontoon if they get kicked in or moved they can easily picked up with a boat hook even s/handed
