Diving contraption.

Re: Diving contraption

Yes, it’s the idea of cleaning under the boat at anchor that I think could be risky

You of all peeps on this forum should get a mini dive kit —- because ( let me get the sp right :)) groupers are in your back yard - metaphorically and really speaking .

Btw I saw a shoal of barracuda on the mainland opposite the Porqurolle islands in bay Estagnol - W of the Presidents summer residence . About 1m long .

I’ve seen barracuda, tuna, shark and dolphins as well as unidentifiable lumps in the water.

Re: Diving contraption

that easydive kit is only 9l at 10 bar, = 90 barliter,
below the boat, say at -2m, your air consumption is roughly 20l/min x 1.2bar= 24barl/min (or more while doing hard work)
so with that kit, you can stay below the boat just 3 minutes...

I'm with Portofino on this, get yourself a "proper" compact dive kit, with a 7...12l - 200 or 300 bar tank (refilleable and maintaineable at the dive store, in nearly every marina)
FYI: 10ltank at 200bar: 2000barl= about an hour airtime for working on the boat)
Get some basic training and NEVER give the set to your kids or untrained ppl; Imagine what will happen if your breath air at -3m, 1,3bar in your lungs, and you go to surface while keeping your mouth closed (as untrained folks tend todo)...= LETHAL

at MapisM
there are quite a few dive spots in SOF where are alway's groupers !
s.a. Le grand Conglue, on wreck Aroyo, south Port Cross, ...
but unfortunately we skipped these places during the FDC, due to too deep, or too exposed, or because we were just too lazy ;-).. good memory's though !! :)

Re: Diving contraption

Its has turned into a much more interesting thread than I thought it would. I only wanted to clean the prop....

I remember, many many years ago, LongJohnSilver saying he went down to the boat, dived to collect scallops and lobster, took them back on board, cooked and ate them for dinner. Perhaps I should do a PADI open water course.

Re: Diving contraption

PADI = Pay And Die Instantly
Seriously tho, it's a great idea. It covers all the basics and with your background you'll find the physics a doddle. The qualification is recognised world wide and adds another dimension to foreign travel.
One warning however... You will find diving addictive in the same way as boats and will find every holiday looking for opportunities to dive

We have lots here in Oz they are called hull cleaning kits

Not sure if there are a lot of divers here or just everyone is tight.. but they are very common and same as Porto's

I find no weights and a wetsuit helps you stick to the bottom of the boat a bit Spiderman like :D

I'll be buying one shortly as full dive gear works but is a bit cumbersome

I do indeed do that, but not quite so frequently these days, unfortunately .

Doing either a PADI or BSAC course makes a lot of sense. Then buy yourself a proper set of diving gear, can be cheaply obtained second hand.
