Diving contraption.

the novelty of chasing octopus clams and gropers has worn off
Well, if you were already in SoF whey you worn off that novelty, you must have sterminated all groupers while you were at that, because in neither of the two forum diving cruises we made with BartW in SoF I've ever seen any - nor I can remember anyone else reporting about them... :(

It’s a little 2 L bottle self contained, vest has pockets for weights + regulator .guage
I can swim about bottles on my back .
When I got it figured if anything went wrong just take it off and surface or surface with it on .Anchored in 3 M over a sandy bottom .
I,ve snorkelled deeper .I never go deeper than I would with normal messing about in the sea .
Thought about buying a bigger bottle , but then the temptation is go deeper and end up with yet another dangerous hobby as well as storage hassle etc etc and as implied really end up start some training .
So just use it for as intended- stern gear scrapes and other hull inspections .
Paid around €450 many years ago .

Boatbore already said it all really, but just to reiterate, you'd better not assume that being 3m underwater is inherently much safer than 10m, or also 20, for that matter.
Sure, when you get into very deep dives (say, 50+m) there's more stuff to be aware of, but that's actually another can of worms...

Port Cros - Middle Porqurolle island its a diving sanctuary / French marine national park .
Google it .
South - seaward side .
Small boat to tuck in helps too :)
Yup big black Groupers - in caves .They pop there heads out for a look - scarey

We did make a couple of dives somewhere around Porquerolles - can't remember the exact spots, though.
Couldn't see any groupers there either, but maybe I just was unlucky.
Besides, water was a bit below my buddy's (aka swmbo) acceptable temperature, so I only did a few dives...

Re: Diving contraption

isn't it 10m = 1 bar?
Aside from some minor roundings, yes.
I was just joking, sort of, because actually 10m adds 1 bar compared to the surface at sea level (which is already 1 bar).
So, 1m underwater adds 0.1 bar, and 1.1 is what you actually get.
From what Boatbore wrote, I'm sure his was a typo anyway... :encouragement:

ahhh yeah makes sense, not that i'd expect anyone to necessarily remember the numbers anyway (unless they were an instructor), was a great post.

Re: Diving contraption

Agreed.
Btw, for the records, also when I said that 1 vs. 1.1 is not much of a difference I was actually joking.
0.1 bar more around your chest is already enough to make breathing extremely hard.

Indeed it was......and I apologise profusely..... personally I am still chuckling at the grouper / groper mix up ! I suspect you can find both I. The South of France, although possibly the fishy type is less common !

I'd expect any diver to know that 10m = 1 bar (difference, thereby sidestepping MapisM's gauge pressure / absolute pressure shenanigans :p). It's pretty fundamental.

Glad to have the typo confirmed, we all do that from time to time :)

LOL, goes to show how candid my shenanigan comments actually are.
I simply assumed that 'groper' was also a typo, and it's only after reading your post that I googled for it on urban dictionary... :o

Re: Diving contraption

This is a subject that I know nothing about. But after going to a boat show today (La Ciotat) I am now qualified to speak. A French company claim to have the cheapest kit on the market, €449 including tax (and I think including a little compressor)
It’s called Eazydive
www.aquaphile.fr
www.eazydive.com
I’ve never really wanted one before, the idea of going under a boat without a crash helmet while she sways with the wind or bouncing over passing wakes, scares me. But eazydive talk about using it to retrieve stuck anchors (so could pay for itself in one go) and finding what you’ve dropped overboard, so it could interest me

Re: Diving contraption

Agian me too not knowing zilch about proper diving ( more than a normal none free diver can swim depth ) but I would be concerned about the maintenance going Fwds —- There’s none !
At least with a proper albeit tiny bottle it’s subject to Fr compressed gas bottle safety laws and procedures.
MOT thingy every 24 months and some refill places actually do there own inspections too .
No idea exactly how much P mine holds etc - tech stuff is lost on me here and life’s to short ( scuse the pun :)) to google up on that 1 or was it 1.1 bar stuff .

Groper / Grouper - :):) - yep typo —- but in reality in the SoF there’s both ,the fish one being the rarer :)

Bouba - head bang risk is there with or with out diving kit .
Imho less so with - cos if correctly weighted you can NOT allways float up and be stuck under the bathing platform or what ever ,if you see what I mean ?
