I suppose that there are many people sailing who have never had to learn morse but I would hope that everyone at least knows U which is sounded by gas rigs (amongst others) when there is poor visibility.

How would everyone know that?
It's not one of the sound signals written into the Colregs AFAIK, although everyone presumably knows it's the signal for "you are running into danger"

Some of us are actually quite fluent in Morse

I had that flashed at me by car headlights as I was approaching Sovereign yacht harbour.
When I called the lock on VHF I was told. It's just the Coastguard, ignore him, you're are coming in fine!".
Apparently someone had reported us as being in trouble because were were "zig zagging " [or tacking].

Which rig was was this?. I've been working with rigs for over 20 yrs and yet to hear one sound any form of fog signal.
They pretty much all do exhibit a light flashing Mo. U though, normally one at each corner of the deck

The world famous swear-word of all time sounds brilliant in morse code.

di di dah dit . di di dah . dah di dah dit . DAH DI DAH

It flows like poetry and you can say it out loud and really mean it! :D

di di dah di di dit dah di di dah dah dah

Is one that is occasionally heard used to good effect

The coastguard reported to the Lytham St.Annes´ lifeboat that a woman on the beach at Southport could hear a morse signal out at sea which the lifeboat confirmed as being the local rig.
