Distance Medway Yacht Club Upnor To Garrison Point

Planning a trip and need the distance/time as above so that I can sort the 'Crossing the Thames' calculations to make the best of the tides.

Did it last year but with absolutly no wind motored all the way out and cant remember how long it took.

Looks about 10 miles but the wiggleness of the Medway is adelling my brain, can any locals out there provide some guidance please. I should be leaving on the ebb just after HW (subject to waking up on time after beers)

East Coast Rivers gives the distance from Garrison Point to Upnor as 10.5 miles so 10 miles from the Medway Yacht Club would be about right. From memory it takes me around an hour and half to do the trip with tide behind me.

At 4.5 - 5 kn ish I allow about 1 1/2 hours. If you have to beat then could be nearer 2 hours.

My question related to going North bound. In order to get the flood up to Maldon on the best river on the east coast (Puts on hard hat and waits for first salvo incoming), I need to be at the Swin Spitway at or just after LW. So I need to ensure that (a) I use the best of the ebb eastbound (ish) (b) get as best a lie in that I can after a few beers at the MYC HW is about 03.00. This is long term forward planning for the Westerly Association Medway met up in August. If I have interpreted and calculated correctly using CTT numbers and the wind is in the right drection should be OK and home for afternoon tea.

There are just too many variations, foibles and incalculatables(!) which is why thsi sailing lark is Fun.

Every time we go that way is a N.Easter going and S.Wester returning. Hope you have better luck.

If you reckon on 4 knots then you need to leave Upnor 1-2 hours before HW to hit the Spitway at LW. Best roll down to Stangate or Queenborough on the previous tide and get a couple of extra hours' sleep.
