Disposing of old petrol

[ QUOTE ]
Whilst all the others make complicated and potentially dangerous suggestion on how to dispose of two gallons of old petrol the best, tried and tested method is to 'accidentally' leave the can in the cockpit of your boat, near the marina gate or with all the other stuff that accumulates around the boats on the hard and after a refreshing cup of tea in the cafe. By the time you go back to recover your 'lost' can, it will be someone elses problem - except he won't know it is old/leaded fuel. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Over here in ex-soviet Baltic .... we still have the "disposal" system of old ...

Put it out on the pavement ... go back a couple of hours later - it's gone. That's old car batt's, divans, beds, cupboards etc. Even if you sift out all the rocks / stones etc. from your garden ... put them outside your fence .. GONE ! Someone else wants them for driveway / rockery / filling pot-holes etc. !!

Magic ... Now I must get my truck out later ... go look for those stones to fill my pot-holes !!

hurl it into a good bonfire.

I think you should read the 200 odd threads in this post that advises against instant bonfire dispsal of unwanted petrol.

Mind you, as others have also said, in my youth petrol was a recreational item and it reminds me of the Chomdley - Warner short Harry Enfield - Christmas Tidings where he says at the end, "A tin of petrol and a box of matches becomes a simple and enthralling 'Petrol and Matches Game.'"

That's called Hackney Streetcycle where I live.

You wouldn't believe the stuff I put out on the pavement that is gone in under 15 minutes!

I've got a small quantity(a couple of litres) of petrol left in a can from the outboard we had for our Wayfarer - so it's at least 10 years old.

We've just acquired an outboard for our tender, so I'll need some fuel for it.

So:

a) is the old fuel likely to be of any use?

or

b) How can I (safely) dispose of old petrol?

Lord - I'm amazed nobody's suggested you wear a full haz suit....

If it was me I would pour it into a hole in the garden, or chuck the entire container into a skip at the tip.. not ecologically sound, but I would suggest there is no ecologically sound way to get rid of old petrol... and you did ask.... :D

Only just spotted this thread. Lots of fun, but going back to the OP:
My local council tip will still gladly accept petrol - though you have to bring it, and leave it, in an approved container which you don't get back.

Put petrol in a milk bottle, stuff a rag in the top soaked in fuel.
light rag
Lob it in general direction of a copper.
Run inside a shop
Nick TV/ trainers etc of your choice
Run like hell, shouting anti immigrant, anti war, anti Brexit, anti police slogan etc etc
Go back next day with TV & complain about reception & get your money back. Flog the trainers to a bloke in a pub for 40 quid

I've always disposed of my surplus 2 stroke mixture in my 4 stroke Honda lawnmower with no problems at all and no visible smoke from the exhaust. I don't bother diluting it with good stuff.

The petrol was already at least 10 years old when the thread started in 2007. It's now more than 20 years old . I doubt if its fit to use in any engine.

Series 111 Land Rover owners will use any Petrol they can get their hands on. Well at least I would when I owned one.
