Hmm, right now, we should be sailing up towards the Sound of Luing on the last leg of our passage to our summer mooring at Loch Linnhe. But it was not to be.

We'd had a pleasant passage to Sanda, followed by an evening stroll to the lighthouse and a couple of drinks at the Byron Darnton, and on board a very nice Hallberg Rassy anchored beside us. On being shown their engine room, it came as a bit of a shock to me that there was no leaking oil or diesel; how very different to the afloat life of the Sgeirs.

Anyway, next afternoon, we were due to catch the tide for Rathlin, where we were supposed to be meeting up with a Forumite of this Parish. Having had the offer of space in our forepeak, Mr and Mrs LongJohnSadler, for it wuz they, wisely decided to bring a tent for the occasion. Just as well, for on starting our engine prior to lifting the anchor, there was a horrible grinding noise, as the prop shaft parted company with a connector coupling in the middle of the shaft.

Now, hardier souls would have carried on regardless, but this was a bit of setback for we wimps who already know the charms of Slough na Morra. Instead of going to the pub that evening, I decided to stay onboard and sulk, thereby missing an impromptu pub performance by a Glasgow band which I believe is called Silver sumfin who were on their hols in the island's bunkhouse. Apparently they're gonnae be the next big thing.

With an overnight stop at Lamlash, we ended up sailing back to Ardrossan where the engineer expressed surprise at seeing we had a Parsons gearbox - not sure if that was a good thing or not. Anyway, we bit the bullet and decided that we might as well go whole hog and get a quote for a new Beta engine.

So, when the new engine is fitted, is it normal to also fit some mood lighting and a perspex engine box to show off our new engine and, hopefully, oil-free bilges?

I think it has to be done! Will there be a ceremony for the commissioning of the new engine?

Something similar to the installation on Fairwinds perhaps?

Nick,

What is the cylindrical "thing" on the top left, next to the seawater pipe?

I have a Beta 13.5hp, and I don't have that bit on mine.

At least the gubbins gave way at a non-critical moment. Sure the investment in the engine is a good idea (or you could just buy a Halberg Rassy?). As a thought make sure the transmission is up to the new power unit. Agree that in those waters you want to be confident about the engine.
Having sailed passed Rathlin several times it was good to spend a couple of days there, even courtesy of Caledonian MacBrayne. Interesting island. Didn't realise the connection with the McDoanalds/McDonnells.
Camping not too bad tho son commented 'Aren't you a bit old for that...'

How nice to see another PROPER installation with white bilge paint! just shows confidence in your engineering skills, and the ability to spot early oil leaks!......( I thought I was the only pillock to do this!)

[/ QUOTE ]Yes, that sort of thing. Something totally tasteless. I'm going for a bigger Beta as I've heard that Fairwinds' engine and alternator doesn't give you enough charge to power up your trouser press. Is that true?

Why two jubilee clips on the strainer and only one on the engine? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Where's yer engine drip tray?

And get them bilges painted, scruffy git! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Well thats an improvement!

Mine's on the back of the engine, and although I can get at it easily enough by lifting a hatch in the cockpit, the filter is horizontal and pi$$es diesel when you unscrew it. It's also a bu99er to bleed as well.

I wonder if there is a conversion kit to move it round the front??

Changed the filter already? Beta reckon 750 hours.

I forgot to fit a fuel tap, so am putting off changing mine unless I really have to . . . just watching the separator bowl carefully. Dead easy to belld with it at the front though. Give Beta a ring and ask them ifit can be retro-moved.

Thought I would fit my perspex box and mood lighting this season after investing in this last season /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
