Morning after some collective advice please - my wife and I are considering purchasing our first boat- not having bought one before I am after some wisdom on actual purchase price vs advertised prices

Likely to be be looking at the 150k-250k level on either new or used - I know being a first purchase it’s likely this will be the time to get the best value for money deal with nothing to sell/px

Would be greatful to understand the standard levels of discount - if any ?

Many thanks

Welcome

Impossible to say for a used boat. You make an offer at a level that you are prepared to pay having done some research as to what you can get for your money elsewhere. sometimes boats sell for the asking price, sometimes they don't. it is very individual.

Slightly different for a new boat, but you are unlikely to pay the full list price but the actual discount may well be hidden in the "extras" which may well form 20%+ of the final price. Unless the boat is in high demand with a long waiting list expect to pay anywhere between 10-20% less than full list. Usually you do better buying a stock boat as dealers are usually keen to shift these.

Thanks for speedy response- appreciate for a second hand boat it is very dependent on a multitude of factors that will determine the price - and like anything it’s only worth what someone will pay for it - but with houses cars etc you know that a listed price generally is not likely to be what the actual sale price will be - maybe a rule of thumb of 5-10% below

So I guess I was wondering do people normally price expecting an xx below offer subject to survey - or is it expected that the offer will match the sale price- all part of my researching :)

Some sellers have unrealistic expectations, others price closer to what they expect to get. Problem is there is no reliable source of actual selling prices, although brokers have more information than private sellers so are more likely to persuade sellers to price realistically.

Very fair questions - and ones we think we have worked out - though sure this will change after a visit to the boatshow - this won’t be an impulse purchase but a longer term activity, but I like to understand the market dynamics as much as possible as part of the ongoing exploration - i am making sure I cap my budget but knowing how much that gets you might make it a newer purchase or a slightly larger boat :)

There have been many threads on this

New. Bid away. You can’t really offend -but do establish with them first you are serious and not fishing

Dealer margin when I was close to a large retailer of large boats was 23% so unless factory subsidised ( which happens) you won’t get more than that unless they have been stuck with t.

As other say stock boat prob a better deal , and also a boat loaded with extras prob has more flexibility.

Second hand it is willing buyer willing seller. You can get some idea by looking on line. Prices do have a country by country variation ( to some extent) as many are not willing to move them so a U.K. boat and one in Italy is not necessarily a fair comparison - but the difference can’t be silly either

Comparing like with like is difficult. Extras, condition etc. Second hand you will spend money on it.

Offer what you think it is worth. Personally I would not look at the silly priced boats ( there are many ) as he seller has started out on the face of it being unrealistic.

If it is an almost new Axopar in Mallorca at the beginning of the season just pay or someone else will. An Italian sports boat in England in October ( I was that seller !) the low ball it!
